Carrollton girls retain harrier titleCARROLLTON — Host Carrollton took the girls’ title for the second straight year while Alliance, St. Thomas Aquinas and East Canton copped the boys’ crowns Thursday in the annual Carrollton Invitational cross country meet.The Carrollton girls were led by Kathi Frase with a fourth-place time of 19:39, while Ann Yeager of the Warriors finished sixth in 19:57.Tusky Valley’s Sandy Moore had the top girls’ time of 19:03. Teresa Jones of Coshocton was second at 19:11.ALLIANCE successfully defended its boys’ Class AAA championship by scoring 40 points to easily outdistance runnerup Perry’s 70.Lowell Terrell of Alliance set a course record with a 14:53 clocking on a layout which is slightly under the regulation 5,000 meters. The old mark was 15:28 turned in by Tusky Valley’s John Sponaugle earlier this year. Sponaugle did not compete yesterday because of an injury.The New Philadelphia Quakers placed third in Class AAA with 75 points. Todd Evans ledthe Quaker effort with a sixth-place time of15:27. Teammate Eric Lukens came in 12th.IN CLASS AA, Coshocton’s Troy Jones had the winning time of 15:07 while Claymont’s Steve Barker was second at 15:25.St. Thomas Aquinas nudged Coshocton for the team title, 48-56.The Class A race was won by East Canton with 29 points to 42 for second-place Newcom-erstown, which had the top two individuals in Scott Lehman (15:39) and Joe Fill man (15:46).Also for Newcomerstown, Kelly Huffman placed second in the open race in 20:10.Alliance took the reserve race with a perfect score of 15, while New Philadelphia came insecond with 53.GIRLSTeam scores: 1 Carrollton 50; 2.
