Jim Bamrick bolted for two first period scores, and Mike Ficken set a school record for most interceptions in one game, with three, in leading Williamsburg to a 33-6 South Iowa Cedar League football * victory over English Valleys last Friday night.Bam rick1 s runs came from 36 and 55 yards out and Ficken got two of his three interceptions in the first quarter to lead the Raiders to their homecoming victory.English Valleys kicked off to open the game, and Bamrick returned the ball to the Haider 44 yard line. Bamrick burst for a six *y^rd gain on the first play, and Dennis Decker gained 14 yards on the second play to give the Raiders the ball on the Bear 36 yard line.With 10:47 left in the first period and on third play of the game, Bamrick broke through the Bear defense and rambled 36 yards into the end zone. Tim Jones split the uprights on the extra point attempt and Williamsburg held ah early 7-0 lead,English Valleys took the kickoff, and after they gained a first down, the Raider defense held and forced the Bears to punt, Scott O’Brien’s punt went to the Raider 45 yard line, and the 'Raiders had the ball for the second time.Williamsburg’s offense was again stopped by the Bear defense and Raiders were forced to punt. English Valleys started a drive that netted two first downs before their offense stalled, and they were forced to punt. Williamsburg, unable to move the ball, punted the pigskin back to the Bears, who started another fine drive that put them deep into Raider territory on runs by O’Brien, Achenbach and Tom Weldon. This drive was to be denied, though as the stonewall Raider defense forced an EV fumble and the Raiders’ John Huedepohl recovered. The Raiders ran out the clock to end the first half holding a 13-0 margin.English Valleys started fast in the third quarter. Following the Raider kick-off the Bears quickly moved deep into Raider territory on three Raider penalties. Following a Bear running play that put the ball inside the Raider 20, Achenbach attempted his fourth pass of the night. An interception with Ficken at the receiving end, his third one, stopped the Beardrive.Both offenses stalled in the third quarter with the Raiders still holding a 13-0 lead after three periods.Williamsburg scored quickly in the fourth quarter when John Huedepohloff from Doehrmann anc pushed it across from thlt; one to give the Red Raider; a commanding 25-6 lead Jones’, point after touch down ; was good and tht Raiders led 26-6.After EV took the kick-off, Achenbach threw a pass only to have his fourth one of the game intercepted, this time by Dennis Schmidt. Schmidt returned it to the Bear five yard line only to have it brought back to the Bear 32 on a Raider clipping penalty. A pass interference call on a Bear defender put the ball on the 17, and from there Doehrmann hit Dan O’Rourke with a 17 yard scoring strike, and the Raiders grabbed a 32-6 lead. Extra point was good by Jones and the Raiders captured their second straight win 33-6 after .an opening loss to BGM.Raider head coach Dave McCurry stated, ‘‘We came out doing exactly what we wanted to do against the Bears, taking the ball at them. We had some let downs in the second quarter but we made adjustments at halftime both offensively and defensively that got us going again in the second half. A bad snap from center enabled the Bears to block the Raider extra point attempt.English Valleys took the Raider kickoff for the second time and following a series of plays found themselves into Raider territory, But on the second play after the Bears had crossed the 50 yard line, Ficken nailed down his first interception of the game on a Larry Achenbach pass.Defense HoldsAfter Williamsburg was unable to drive, they punted the ball into Bear territory. Two pla£s later Achenbach dropped back to pass, only to have his second pass intercepted. Again Ficken was on the other end as the first quarter ended.banged in from the one after a long Raider drive. The extra point attempt failed and Williamsburg led 1^0.Bears scoreFollowing a Raider kick-off, English Valleys recorded three straight first downs as O’Brien had runs of 22; 32 and 23 yards to put the ball on the Raider 15. From there, Weldon gained five yards and O’Brien nine to put the ball on the Williamsburg one. The next play saw O’Brien plunge over from the one to make the score 19-6. The extra point attempt was not good.Following the kickoff, Williamsburg took control of the ball with only two minutes left in the game. The Raiders drove to their own 32yard line and 1:11 remained. On the next play, Raider quarterback Kenny Doehrmann lofted a 69 yard bomb to Mike Ficken who was hauled down at the Bear one yard line. Dennis Decker took the next ftand-yards in eight carries and two touchdowns. Mike Ficken also contributed an excellent defense game at corner back with three interceptions.”McCurry continued, “Looking ahead to Sigourney, the state’s number one class 2A team, we’ll have to eliminate our mistakes, be consistent and take the game to them. They’re a fine ball club, and if we sit back and wait, they'll'wafic all over us.’’English Valleys, now 0-3, plays Montezuma at home Friday night.
