To the Printer of tht Public Advertifer.SIR,I Cannot but refleft, with a degree of pity and hoifor, on the folly and inhumanity of thofe perfons who countenance, by their attendance and money, that cruel and unnatural diverfion called Boxing ! Can any thing be more unbecoming the dignity of man, and the noble capacity of n rational being, than to aiTemble together, (by hundreds and by tHoufands) for ho better purpofe than that of gazing upon two infatuated men, who are madly exerting their Utmortffirength, (kill, and agility toconqaer, or murder each other ?'β€”Is not fuch a plea-fure and prattice a difgrace hven to common humanity 7 And how much more fo to a civilized nation, whofe eftablifhed religion and government have gloriouffy diftinguilhed her among the neighbouring kingdoms ? Shall we, who bear the . facred name of Chriftian, arid live under fo wife and powerful a Legiflaturd (which ought to be β€œ a terror to evil-doers as well as praife to them that do well;”) fhallwe, I fay, encourage, by our condud arid fortunes, fo de'teltable and inhuman adiverfion as that of boxing ?
