Corning improved its record to 4-0 overalland 1-0 in conference play.The Bobcats looked like they were going to strike first on the first play of the second quarter when kicker Jeff Page attempteda 39-yard field goal, but the kickfell short, ending a 10-play drive.Into the second quarter, Gosnell had its first opportunity to score, but the Pirates turned the ball over. On third down and eight with the ball on the Bobcats’ 17 yard line, Jeff Eilis completed a pass to Shawn Hodges, who fumbled at the 10 yard line. Corning picked up the ball and ran back to the 50 yard line with 2:40 left in the first half.After exchanging interceptions, the Pirates had the ball back at the Bobcats’ 37 yard line with 37 seconds left in the half. On first down, Ellis’ first pass fell incomplete before hitting Tyrone Wiggins at the six yard line with 23 seconds left in the half. On the following play, senior tail back A1 Theragood rushed the ball to the two yard line with five seconds left. On the play Theragood went out of the game with an injury. On second-and-goal Ellis found Wiggins wide open in the end zone to put the Pirates ahead, 6-0, as time expired. Jenz Jernigan’s extrapoint try was wide left.But the Pirates wouldn’t have the lead for long. On the openingdrive, Gosnell moved the ball from their own 17 yard line to their own 33 yard line in five plays before Ellis fumbled, turning the ball over to the Bobcats with 9:03 left in the third quarter. When Corning recovered the football, it had the ball first-and-10 at the Pirates’ 17 yard line.It took two plays for Corning to put the Pirates away. On both plays running back Gavin McDowell ran the ball. First to the four yard line before crossing the goal line on the next play with 8:22 left in the third quarter. Page’s extra-point kick gave the Bobcats a 7-6 lead.The Bobcats weren’t through with Gosnell in the third quarter. On Coming’s next possession, the Bobcats threw Gosnell their knock-out punch. With 14 seconds left in the third quarter, McDowell punched the ball into the end zone for the second time in the quarter. Page’s extra-point kick put Corning on top 14-6.The Pirates picked up a couple of turn overs in the final quarter, but were unable to capitalize. With Corning driving, Pirates’ junior tackle Jarrod Kelly picked up a fumble at their own 42 yard line as McDowell mishandled a flip pass from Bolen with 8:06 left in the game. Seven plays later the Pirates faced a fourth-and-five.
