Valley gets win,loses star bachMASONTOWN - Valley High school warmed up for its meeting with cross-county rival Kingwood. set next weekend, by downing Rivesville 14-0 Thursday night but it may have been a costly win forthe Pioneers.Valley lost runningmidwayMetheny second quarter as were driving forback Edthethrough the Pioneers their firsttouchdown of the night.Up to that point Metheny, withMark Whittaker also out with an injury, had been the workhorse of the Valley attack, gaining 95 yardson 12 carries. He suffered a broken leg in the drive and will be out forthe season.It was Metheny who set up the first score, which was capped by aone-yard plunge by quarterbackPat McMillen.Valley started its drive at its ownseven-yard line after holding Rivesville there on fourth down. Metheny carried on most of theplays after that until he was injured.Mistakeswholecost Rivesville the and the Ramsgame.threatened three other times but were thwarted by fumbles, interceptions and penalties.In tnfc second period, a 60-yard touchdown pass was nullified by a penalty, and it was an indication of things to come for the Rams.In the fourth quarter, Rivesville drove to the Masontown 15 before fumbling and Greg Street fell on itfor the Pioneers.One series later Rivesville was driving deep into Masontown territory again when Ray Hall intercepted a pass on the Pioneer four-yard line.That set up the other Valleytouchdown which came five plays later when McMillen tossed a 12-varder to Mark Polce.wValley had 191 yards rushing and McMillen hit three of 16 passes for 49 vards. The Pioneers had 16 first downs to 11 for Rivesville and were penalized 95 yards to 111 yards forthe losers.Offensively.
