Eugene Ewanek Wins Stonewall Demolition DerbyClose to two thousand people thronged through the gates of Kins* men Lake, Stonewall, on Sunday, September 24th. to witness the final Demolition Derby of Stonewall Hell Drivers for this year.Thirty-seven drivers from Winnipeg, ArgyJe, Woodlands, Cuniton land Stonewa'Ul risked the elements of injury, all with one purpose in mind, Itftiat of victory and a beautiful trophy, along with top prizemoney.Five he'ts in. all were run off with the winners of each heat qualifying for the final.In the first heat, eight ears lined up for battle— Richard Gugash and Don Cassie, of Winnipeg mid Harvey Tyerman, lion Buckle, Jack Willis, Lyle Dew, Tom Hareus and Ron Vasas, all of Stonewall. Harvey Tyerman, driving a 1955 Dodge, won the heat, knocking off Lyle Dew, wiio was driving a’ 1949 Ford.Ten ears qualified for the second heat.— Bob Gosselin, FrankSay well, Blame Bassett and PaulBoyko, of Winnipeg; Oscar Krcu-ger, of Guhton; and Clinton Inman, Murray Van Caeyzeele, Robt Mann, Bob Braden and Harold O ugh ton, of Stonewall. Frank Say-well, in Lis 1951 Dodge was the winner polishing off Murray Van Caeyzee!e in the final match of the beat.The third heat drew ten more vehicles— _ Robert Harrison. Bill Storrse. Brian Good, Hoy IlaOani, Lon Anderson, Bob Cameron. Dennis Whitehead. Larry Gillespie and Martin Monkmaxi, all of Stonewall, and Terry Bortinstle, of Grosso Isle. Terry Borthislle was shaken up when he collided into the rear of Bill vStorrie’s 1956 Oltlsrnohik*. Roy [valiant, driving a 1940 Nosh Itamh-ler, defeated Larry Gillespie, but only after a lengthy dual. Talking to Larry after, he said his foot slipped off the clutch, stalling his ear and he was unable to grt it started.Eugene Ewanek won the fourth heat over tune other competitors, who weir Gray don Murray, Harold Harrison, Dave Sheldon, Gary Armstrong. Barry Mann, Niek Panehuk, and VV.rt.vju- Tjeniiau, of Skmewall; Bill Sinclair, of Woodlands and Don Carter, of Argyle. Twenty-three cars wore mobile enough to take part and Harold Harrison, of Stonewall, driving a 1957 Dodge was declared the winner, receiving $35.00 and a chance to qualify for the final stakes.Five ears lined up for battle in (the final feature of the day. Harold Harrison, Eugene Ewanek, Harvey Tyerman, Frank Say well and Hoy Ifciflant pint on a real show. Harvey was the first to drop out of the ba! title and llaroid Harrison nest Frank Say well was nest to bough out, leaving only Roy Rafiant and Eugene Ewanek to do batiile, Roy finally had to concede to Eugene when his car caught fire. Eugene received the Stonewall Hell DriversDemolition Derby Championship Trophy, along with $75.00 cash. The trophy is up for annual competition and Hie winner receives a small replica to keep.Roy RaifRmt, Harvey Tyerman anti Eugene Ewanek participated in a grudge match, gi ving the crowd a real show to wind up the days activities. Shortly after commencing the grudge match, Roy’s second ear caught fire, but the Stonewall Fire .Department soon extinguished the flames, and after five pails of waiter, Roy was back in the race nnce again. Who won the match? Well, all three cars wound up in the centre of the field lit one big heap.
