Sept. 2 6.—(/P)—The baseball world tonight hailed a new “Miracle Man.Charles “Gabby Street earned the title today when he brought his St. Louis Cards triumphantly through one of the most heated National league pennant races on record and took a place alongside George Stallings, manager of the Boston Braves in 1914, as one of baseball’s im-n ortals. * ,.Sixteen years ago Stallings led histeam from nowhere in mid-seasonto a league title in October. Streettonight had duplicated that feat. The Redbirds have yet to win the worldseries as the Braves did in 1914. butwin or lose the world title the knot-hol gang of today will hear andread about “Gabby years hence.Only a fleeting month and a half ago all but a few considered the Cards out of the race. Street was one of those few and it was s“never-say-dfe spirit that kept his hopes alive. With the Redbirds some dozen games behind the league leaders the first of August, “Gabby kept plugging away, always cheerful, always optimistic. Now another league pennant is to float overfportsmen’s Park here and to the team’s grizzled manager goes most of the credit. »Busher Two Years Ago.Two years ago Street came out of the bush league to give the majors r whirl. In 192 he was a Cardinal coach, but his word carried little weight in team management and his duties consisted mainly of taking care of Grover Cleveland Alexander^ and keeping him on the “straight?*] and narrow.Came 1930 and “Gabby got his big chance. That he has made the most of it is shown by the pennant he has won his first year as a big league manager and the fact he hasa contract for another year with aboost in salary. He is the first Red-bird manager since 1926 to hold his job for two years.“Gabby has kept fighting in the/rV.v*vyym *5YAw»_* • • • • • . • • «* « t 9 I « • • t ■ ■JU• #KBv/* l-i jr * •• • * ^rar 9 * i* 9f ip.fc • *m •IlTO • «Tj1 » j» * « * • •mjTjKjmjtr • «' ■ • 91 jface of disheartening breaks all season. His task was an uphill pull from the start since players and umpires alike considered him a '“FreshBusher’ at the beginning of the season. His team did not look good to the experts but he was optimistic. In May the Redbirds rocketed into first place and it looked like Street had a winner. Then came injuries to such stars as Frankie Frisch, Charles Gelbert, Ernie Orsatti,Ranks With Stallings, Former Braves Leader, Among Game’s Immortals.“Chick Hafey and Jim Bottomley and the club slumped to fourth, where it remained until September1. When it appeared Cardinal players were not taking Street seriously President Sam Breadon early inAugust announced his selection aspilot for another year. That apparently was a master stroke and largely as a result the team spurted.Tireless Worker.Street has proved a tireless andcourageous worker in the face of allodds. He has been a strict disciplinarian. His strategical moves on the baseball field have nearly all been to ttye good. His selection of pin^h-hitters and relief hurlers during the last road trip that clinched the pennant for the Cards stamped him as an excellent judge of his players. To Street goes the credit for making a brilliant hurler of “Wild Bill Hallahan. The southpaw lacked confidence and “Gabby gave it to him.*Street was born in Alabama forty-seven years ^ago. His home now isJoplin, Mo. He gained fame while abattery-mate of Walter Johnson as a member of the Washington Senators from 1907 to 1912.“Gabby came to the Cardinals from the Knoxville team of the Sally League, where he was manager, in 1928.
