Eagles Win 2nd Team Relay TitleBy JIM STADTERSandburg swimmers finished first or second in seven of the nine events, but still had to hat tie down to the wire before annexing their second straight team championship at the Thornridge relays Friday night.This was Thornridge's third invitational swim meet, thesecond under a relays format, but already the tradition has been set The meet goes down to the final event for a decision.Sandburg didn’t really have to win the final event P'riday night, but the Eagles did need at least a third place finish to wrap up the team title A year ago, Sandburg edged out Thornridge by one point for the team trophy in another down to the wire decisionTHIS YEAR’S invitational saw six teams battle it out on fairly even terms from start tofinish.Sandburg set the pace with three blue ribbon efforts, but Thornridge, Tinley Park and Oak Forest all hung in there with two winning performances each The big difference wasthe four second places the Eagles added to their three wins Tinley had two seconds, nobody else more than one.After seven events in this nine-race all-relay showdown, Sandburg and Tinley Park shared the lead with 28 points apiece, while Thornridge waswithin striking distance with its total of 20Then, came the 400-yard breaststroke relay, an event in which half of the six teams entered were disqualified. Tinley was included in the scratches,an especially harmful blow to the Titans title hopes4THE HOST Falcons flew right into the thick of the battle by winning that infractions-plagued race. With one event, the 400 freestyle relay, remaining the scoreboard showed Sandburg in front with 32 points, followed closely by Thornridge with 29 and Tinley Park with 26Sandburg needed just a third piace to shut out the rest of the field, but did even better than that with a winning effort of4 06.7 fashioned by Cindy Vos,Brody, Eagles Drown Three OpponentsAfter an opening loss toHomewood-Flossmoor, Sandburg’s rapidly improving and talented girls swimming team has piled up three straight wins, including Tuesday's 110-42 rout of Bremen at MidlothianFreshman sensation Carrie Brody was an individual standout for Sandburg, winning the 200 and 500 yard freestyleraces. In all. Sandburg captured 10 of 11 events, the lone Bremen victory coming from senior Judy Surdel in the 100 yard butterfly.Surdel was also second in the backstroke to Sandburg's Carol Palmer Palmer was on the front end of both winning Sandburg relay teams, joining Sally Crewe, Kathy Brennan and Valerie Schmidt for a 2:13 clocking in the 200 medley. She teamed with Brennan, Cindy Peters and Cindy Vos in the freestyle relay.OTHER SANDBURG firsts were accomplished by Kim Lynch in the 200 yard individual medley. Samuelson. Carol Palmer and Carrie Brody. And. the 400 butterfly team of Kim Lynch, Durkin, Brody and Brennan.The big point-getter though, was in the breaststroke, where three teams got disqualified behind Sandburg’s second place finish Diane Durkin, Linda McGuire, Sandy Nelson and Crewe brought that one in. Meanwhile, the diving trio of Beth Tannehill, Mary Byars and Schmidt also grabbed a second place.
