PROCO, Utah Pi — Brigham Young university, rated to lose by five touchdowns, nearly pulled a Major upset last night, but pow erful San Jose came from behind in the final quarter to squeeze out a narrow 28-25 football victory. The Spartans scored seven points in each quarter, with fullback Joe Ulm scoring each touchdown. Quarterback Larry Rice converted , every time. All of San Jose's scores came suddenly on long matches which covered the field in half a dozen plays. The Cougars grabbed a score in the first period with a grinding push from their own 17-yard line, in which they picked up seven consecutive first downs. Willard Stolworth plunged over from the one-yard line. The Spartans were handed their second touchdown when halfback Bill Walker intercepted a bad pass on the BYU 10-yard stripe and Ulm plunged over in two plays. The Brighams came to life again after the half and grabbed two quick touchdowns, both on passes from quarterback Lavon Satter field to halfback Dick Felt. The first one was from 35 yards out and the second som 20 yards out, was set up by a San Jose fumble. In the final period, BYU pulled a double reverse, scoring from the 20-yard line to put the Spartans in the hole, 25 to 21. But the power ful Golden Raiders always seemed able to pour on the goals when needed and scored only five plays after the kickoff with four min utes to spare.
