LOUIS, Sept. 26 (a*)—On the eve of another world series Grover Cleveland Alexander, hero of the 1926 classic, today came back to St. Louis—but not to Sportsman’s Park.Prom a pitcher's mound scarce ly two miles from the scene of some of his greatest triumphs he was scheduled to hurl at least one inning for the bearded ball club of the House of' David against the St. Louis Stars, a negro nine.Five years ago bells rang, sirens walled and the populace with one voice loosed shouts for. Old Pete, whose remarkable performance of pitching the Cardinals to their first pennant and only world title made secure Ms niche in baseball’s hall of fame.As events later proved, it also marked the beginning of the end for a long and eventful career in organized baseball. Soon Alexander was barnstorming through the provinces, cashing in as best 'he could on his name.That, at- least, is’ still worth something. One of the chief inducements held out to customers' by the House of David- outfit 'is Grover Cleveland Alexander, none other—a ghost of one of baseball’s great, put on exhibition for the j crowd...Yet Old Pete, manager of the squad, is, set apart- from his teammates, as befits - a man with 1 a proud history. Hig unique contract provides, among other things, an allowance of 25 cents daily for a shave.
