A * - v ,jyear’s study toward a doctor’s degree, will be going after her second state title since 1971 with an inexperienced team with a strong north Alabama flavor.The only varsity returner from last year is Decatur’s Barbara Johnson, but in Barbara the Hawkettes have the MVP from last summer’s regional clinic at Athens College.Joining Barbara on the varsity team are Beth Andrews, Athens; Elizabeth Lockett, Elkmont; Wynkie Steele, Athens; Janice McGee, Huntsville; Tina Luker, Speake; and Karen Bolton, Huntsville.The B team will have as members Pamela Watson, Ardmore; Ceri Barbre, Athens; Vickie Henderson, Tanner; Jan Mitchell, Clements; Furlinda Malone, Athens; Janice McCartney, Rogersville; Shelby Williams, Huntsville; and Leslie Walker, Ashland City, Tenn. Team manager is Louanne Courington of Jasper.THUS FAR, the scheduled arranged by McDonald calls for 10 dates, including four tournaments, one of which will be the Alabama Women’s Intercollegiate Tournament atAthens College Nov. 9-10.Following Thursday’s 3:30 p.m. date with Cullman, the Hawkettes will host Athens, Cullman and Snead for an afternoon of volleyball Oct. 1 at 3:30 p.m. The first out-of-state trip will be to Columbus, Gal.,for the Columbus Colleg'e invitational tournament Oct.'10-11.Other tournaments set for the 1974 season include the University of North Alabama tournament in Florence Oct. 25-26 and the Athens tournament Nov. 1-2.“We are looking forward to this season even thoughwe’ve only got one really experienced player back,’’ McDonald says. “Our practices so far have gone very well and I am pleased with the caliber of play our new team members have shown,I THINK WE will be able to hold our own with most junior college teams once we get a little experience.’’In recent years, the two-year-volleyball program has turned out quite a few good women players, as attested to by the fact that four of the six starters at Athens — where Calhoun warmed up with a practice match last Friday — are Calhoun graduates.“It seems like I just teach them the basics and all of a sudden they have to leave,’’ McDonald says.“But I guess that’s the way it is at a junior college.”
