Monday NoonAFL OfficialtoProfessional football will be the topic at next Monday’s luncheon of the San Antonio Quarterback Club in the Anacacho Room of the St. Anthony Hotel. But the featured, speaker can talk intelligently arid enter-tainly on all brands of football;-in'fact/bn all kinds of sports.. He is Mickey Herskowitz, assistant to the president of the American Football League with headquarters in New York. But, until' a year or so ago, he was sports editor of the Houston Post, much-sought after-dinner speaker, radio and TV commentator, part-time teacher of journalism at Sam Houston State College and president of the Texas Sportswriters Association.His wit and graceful writing style is matched by his ability to speak humorously and- factually. He claimed as a sportswriter to belong to that rare breed that tries not to take themselves or the events they cover with toal seriousness. A football game,” he has said, “is not Life vs. Death.” The result was his election by his fellow sportswriters for three times as the state’s outstanding man in his job,Herskowitz was a “discovery of Clark Nealon, formerly a member of The Light’s sports staff. Nealon assigned him to report professional baseball and hts worked gained him national recognition. He became sports editor at 31 when Nealon was made sports director of the Houston Post.He’s a native of Houston and a 1956 graduate of the Unversily of Houston. He is married and has three young children: Brian, who wants to become a professional football player;- Steve, who hopes to combine careers of fishing'and auto racing, and a daughter, Robin, whose ambition Is to meet the Beatles.
