Pioneers nipped by Parsons 16-14PARSONS — Parsons High had to struggle to stay undefeated Friday night, but managed to score a touchdown and two extra points with 1:21 left in the game to defeat Masontown Valley 16-14.Valley had rallied from an 8-6 halftime deficit to score on a six-yard run by Ed Metheny in the third quarter, but missed the extra points attempt.Then Pat McMillen chased the Parsons punter out of the end zone before he could get a kick away, giving the Pioneers a safety and a 14-8 advantage.Parsons started its winning drive by blocking a Valley punt and gaining possession at midfield, and a pass interference call against thePioneers kept the drive alive giving Paul Gutshall time to score the tying touchdown from one yard out. Simmons then grabbed a pass for the two extra points thatclinched the verdict.Valley grabbed the advantage at 6-0 in the first quarter when Mark Whittaker, the area's leadingscorer going into the game, smashed across from two yards away. A pass for two extra points failed, however.Parson took its first lead at 8-6 on a second quarter touchdown that also resulted from a blocked punt. Bill Judy fell on the ball in the Pioneer end zone for the six points, and Simmons was there to receive a pass for the all important extra points.Valley won the statistical battle, gaining 197 yards on the ground and 56 in the air as McMillen hit on eight of 15 attempts.Parsons managed only 112 yards rushing and didn't complete a pass.
