ijrinus inn36-14 WinBy ALLEN GODSEY Times-News CorrespondentMARION — Coach Harry Fry’s Gate City Big Blue Machine overcame its first big hurdle in pursuit of the Southwest District football title by defeating Marion here Friday night, 36-14.Gate City, midway through the first quarter, started a drive from its own 31 and seven plays later fullback Doug Humphries went over right tackle from a yard out for the TD. Toetoe Godsey converted, making it 8-0.On Marion’s next possession, on second down quarterback John Crewey fumbled and with Gate City’s All-State candidate David Flanary recovering the fumble, the Big Blue took over at the Scarlet Hurricane’s 37.Three plays later Mickey Rogers covered the final 23 yards around right end for the touchdown. Bobby Beville made the PAT on a run.Marion came back with a touchdown when Crewy went around the right flank from seven yards away making it 16-6.After a fumble exchange, Gate City went from its 29 in five plays, with big Humphries covering the last yard. The bid play in the drive was a 47-yard run by Rogers.After the teams traded possession twice, Rogers cut off right tackle for seven yards and the Blue Devils’ fourth TD.Gate City’s last touchdown came on a 16-yd. run by the uncatchable Rogers, who in addition to scoring three touchdowns, carried the ball 20 times for 229 yards.Quarterback Crewey passed 37 yards to John Wilson for Marion’s final touchdown.
