Col-Hi Bombers* Turnout at Richland Tops Hundred MarkIf thlt;*re weren't a rule allowing only U men on the field at ofie time Columbia High ichool of Richland would probably be the top grid team in Southeastern Washington. Football rules being what they are. Coach Francis W. Rish is only saying that he doesn’t expect to be the doormat of the lower Yakima valley league.A grand total 'of ‘110 candidates turned out for the Bomber squad, from a high school with an enrollment of 710. That figures out to more than a* quarter of the male student body. There has been some reduction during the early practice and Rish ha?' managed to equip each of his potential grid stars with a pair of football pants, but for body-contact sessions hip and shoulder pads have to be swapped around.Rish is a newcomer at the Kicn-land school this year, and it is his first high school assignment. Playing end and center at Washington State, he won letter* in 1930, 1940, and 1941. The army tagged mm shortly after his graduation, and shipped him off to the army air base at Amarillo, Texas, where he played on and coached the base team.Fundamental* WeakWhen the material poured in on him September 3, he found some lettennen in the horde. However, there war a great deal of work to he done on blocking and tackling, and before the recent lower valley jamboree, most of the practice sessions were devoted to fundamental drills and defense.Col-Hi had an open date this weekend, which gave the Bombers a chance for more work before the formal season opener against Se-lah Friday. Rish would be a little happier if the rest of the schedule were reversed, because the three weekends in October pit the Bomber i against what are expected to be the toughest team* of the year.The Slate lists Wa-Hi at the big Bomber Bowl October 4, Richland at Kennewick October 11, and Richland at Yakima October 18 and Pasco at Richland October 25. Although neither the Pirate* nor the Blue Devils opened the season as favorite*, they are the two largest schools on the list, and the Pasco Bulldogs, of course, have been picked a* the powerhouse of the circuit.November 1 the Bombers travel to Sunnyside, and return to Richland for the last two game*. Grandview on November 11, and Prosser November 18-Will Use Single Wing Rish will stick to the single wing, leaving the fancier offen*ive* to more experienced teams. He tentatively listed as his regular starting lineup-Dale Gier and Jack Davis as halfbacks: Don Richey, fullback; Roy Vaughn, quarterback; John Hughes and Ed Sandusey, ends: Bob Kraus and Ken Jones, tackles: Massey and Duane Allen, guaf;- and - “Scooter” Crowder, center. He has another hard running back in Charles Clark. Two men were on the cripple list la*t week,, Edsel Skow, a guard, and Ray ..Samson, an end.To take care of the overflow from the varsity squad, a Jayvee schedule is being lined up which will probably include eight games. Oreen Cowles is handling the B *quad. operation*,'“Foxey Joe” Barker got boosted to vice-principal this fall, but he Stiil retain* the basketball coaching job. Edgar Haag, former ^escq staff member, will coach track,Col-Hi ha* been troubled with growing pains the last lew years, what with one thing and another, such ‘ as .atomic bomb*, but the athletic -program is, beginning to catch up with the school* which have been operating for many more year*.The Bomber Bowl teats 6000 making It One of the largest high ■ school stadium* in the Northwest, and to help fill it, a Monday Morning Quarterback club ha* been added to the already imposing list of organisation* in Richland.And if the Villager* go for the high achool team* the way they go for everything'else, which is big. Col-Hi i* going- to loom large in high school competition before many years have passed.
