Soviets may get cup copy at Portage, MamValery Vasiliev and Vladislav Tretiak accepting the Canada Cup at Portage Avenue and Main Street?it could happen if local businessman George Smith gets his way. He plans to ask the Soviet Union to send some players to Winnipeg to accept a copy of the Canada Cup trophy.Vasiliev is the captain of the team and is a likely candidate to receive the trophy, but Tretiak is the player most responsible for defeating Team Canada in the final game of the Canada Cup series Sept. 13.A spokesman for the Soviet embassy in Ottawa says his country willconsider the Invitation and might even invite Smith to make a similar presentation in Moscow. '‘Why not? I think it is a good idea, Igor Lobanov said in an interview yesterday from Ottawa. The idea of having a ceremony at Portage and Main seems appropriate. That's where former hockey star Bobby Hull signed with the World Hockey Association’s fledgling Winnipeg Jets in the early 1970s. The Jets also recently signed junior hockey sensation Dale Hawerchuk to a long-term contract at the intersection.Smith hopes the presentation willmake up for the way Alan Eagleson prevented the team from taking the real Canada Cup home following their 8-1 victory over Team Canada in Montreal Sunday.A controversy ensued after Eagleson spotted the Soviet team leaving the forum with the trophy in an equipment bag and called in the Montreal police.Eagleson first argued that the trophy belonged to the people of Canada and would be placed on permanent display at the Governor-General’s residence at Rideau Hall. But he later said he would loan the Soviets a. trophy if they put in an official request. The Soviets have notasked to borrow the trophy.Lobanov said he couldn't promise whether the Soviet players would be able to make the trip to Winnipeg, butsaid he would personally support theidea. It depends on timing,” he said adding that the Soviet players are preparing for the stan of Iheir regular hockey season.Meanwhile, Eagleson says he doesn't mind if Smith gives the Soviets the trophy. Hockey Canada spokesman Lou Lefaive echoed Eagleson’s sentiments but said he wasn’t sure whether Smith and his group could legally manufacture a copy of the trophy.
