Vernon punt and romped 40 yards for a touchdown.MTVHerrinFirst downs ..........431Yards rushing ,..... 73180jPass attempts ......• ••••••• i/8jCompletions ..........i3jYards passing31201 Yards lost ..............4723Net gain (scrim)57177Yards penalized ,945No. of punts62Punting average .21304THE PREPSCORESwmIThe Rams eventually fought back for a 6-6 deadlock on a 31-yard pass play in the second quarter, but Herrin added another TD before halftime and counted a safety in the third period for the final 14-6 score. The 31-yard aerial from Eddie Edwards to Lanny Shaw was the lone Vemois completion and just about the entire offensive act which the Rams were able to stage during the night’s work. It gave Mt. Vernon a first down inside the one-yard line from where sub QB Walter Pogue plunged over. The Rams, obviously lacking speed In the backfield, gained just 73 yards running from scrimmage in the game. Herrin forwards, led by Louis Meeks, 198, David Saner, 221, and Dennis Callis, 196, tossed the Vernois for 47 yards minus yardage. As against Mat toon, Mt. Vernon came up with tough defensive play, twice stopping Herrin touchdown drives inside the 5-yard line. Arthur Ellis, Ron Simmons, Roger Glasco, Gordon Rhine, Jim Carter, Tom Henry and Barry Dodson registered fine defensive work for the Vernois.Mattoon’s Green Wave, which edged past the Rams 13-6 last week, rolled over Centralia 39-13 last night.Coach Bob Groves’ Herrin club, a 19-6 winner over Ziegler- Royalton last Friday, presented a fast, hard running attack against the Rams which belied the modest score in the Zeigler game.Lawrenceville 14, Carmi 7 Murphysboro 14, Pinckney-ville 0Carbondale 18, Metropolis 6 Anna-Jonesboro 6, Chester 6 (tie)Salem 47. Tno Tigers repeatedly tried for yardage on fourth down rather than resorting to punts.Another Important factor in Herrin’s win was the punt-return handiwork of safety-man Phillips. The veteran senior several times brought the ball back further than the Ram punters booted it. On two occasions Phillips scooped the bounding pigskin for quick returns much like a shortstop charging a baseball for a playat first base.Mt. He finished stronger than he started and at the end “Willie the Wisp’’ was a thoroughly beaten man.“He reminds me of Max Schfeling,” said Angelo Dundee, Pastrano’s manager. “It’s no dis-grace to lose to a fighter like IUthis. Willie didn’t lose any pres-|SOn' tige. He’s still the champion.”But Dundee conceded his fighter was the loser. It was Gregorio’s 42nd consecutive victory in 44 fights as a professional.
