TF North beaten by Rich SouthBy Alan Macey Shawn Hawkins, substituting for injured Rich South star Dwight Driver, rushed for 170 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Stars to a 29-13 nonconference victory over TFNorth yesterday in Calumet City.The loss dropped TF North’s overall record to 0-3 entering next Friday’s contest at Bradley.Hawkins stole the show in the second half. He returned the second half kickoff 88 yards to put Rich South ahead 14-7. After the Meteors responded with a 10-play, 67-yard drive of their own to cut the margin to 14-13 with 6:23 to play, Hawkins struck again. On a second down play from his own 33, he raced 67 yards to push the Stars into a 22-13 lead with 4:54 left in the third period.THE TF NORTH scoring drive was capped off by Curt Bailey’s 10-yard run which had narrowed the lead to a single point before Hawkins struck. Bailey finished with 93 yardsin 19 carries to lead his team.Rich South (2-1) completed the scoring with 7:27 left in the fourth quarter as with Hawkins once again the culprit. He carried in from the 25yard line on a run around left end.“Our offense improved this week, but our defense didn’t, said a dejected Meteor coach Jerry Munda. “And again we made too many mistakes. (TF North lost three fumbles and had a pass intercepted by the Stars.).The Meteors had wasted little time in taking the early lead. They took the opening kickoff and marched 59 yards in 10 plays all on the ground. The final two yards were covered by halfback Brian Bonic on a plunge up the middle to give TF North a 6-0 lead about five minutes into the game. The extra point kick by Nick Vujasin made it 7-0THE STARS took advantage of a break to score their first touchdown. After stopping the Meteors deep in their own end zone, Curt Baileypunted the ball into a strong wind and the ball was downed at his own seven yard line which was 10 yards behind the original line of scrimmage.On first down, tailback Shawn Hawkins, playing in place of the injured Rich South star Dwight Driver, went the seven yards for the score. The extra point kick failed which enabled TF North to maintain a one-point lead with 2:03 remaining in the half and that’s the way it ended.Although the Meteors only managed one score in the first 24 minutes, they dominated with their running game. But the end zorte eluded them. However, Rich South, thanks to the emergence of Hawkins as a genuine break-away threat, had no trouble getting the ball into pay dirt.TF North all-state candidate Mirko Jurkovic didn’t play in the fourth quarter due to a bruised knee. However, he is expected to be back in action next week.
