Thomasville News*Douglass High School has a winning football team for the second straight season. It means so very much to know that the alumni, students and city is behind the Lions.Such things makes the team want to win just that much more. It is a shame how few people are in the quarterback club at Douglass to support such a fine and deserving group of young players.We are asking that all parents of the players, former students of Douglass, and all interesed persons that want the Lions to go all the way to come out and attend QB Club meetings.Don't worry about money now, just come an help plan the Lion’s future. The Lions made too many penalties in the earlier part of this quarter. Halfback Steve Brown intercepted a Tifton pass on the Tiger 40 Yd. line.Douglass drove to 10 but a penalty ended drive with Wilson High taking over, QB Cobb Mitchell rolled out a passed eight yards to L.W. Williams for Douglass’ first touchdown and a 6-0 lead. John Darring’s kick for the point failed.Steve Brown, Edress Dawson and John Darring ran very hard during this quarter. Cobb Mitchell quarterbacked the Lions to the Tifton 22 Yd. line, thanks to blocking by Banks, Earl Armster, big Sidney Baldwin, Ray Ford, Peter Lawson and Velver Anderson.Cobb Mitchell flipped the pigskin to right end Henry Childs who weaved and bobbed 22 yards for the Lions' second touchdown. Darring missed the point (kick) and Douglass led 12-0. Steve Brown moved ball very well in this quarter.SECOND QUARTER - Neither team scored during this quarter. Basically a defensive battle. Steve Brown grabbed a Cobb Mitchell pltchout and raced 60 yards for a Douglass TD but a holding penalty mullified the play. The score at halftime was Douglass 12 Wilson 0.THIRD QUARTER - David Banks, Larry Jones and L.W. Williams had to leave gamefor injuries. Banks and Jones later returned to action. John Darring had two beautiful runs in asustained drive but penalties caused the drive to end., •Larry Jones hit the Tifton quarterback and made him fumble on the eight yard line. After Jones’jarring tackle center Ray Ford plucked the ball off the turf, tucked it under his arms and galloped into the end zone and the Lions were ahead19-0. Then Cobb Mitchell handed off to Kirk Mitchell whose sprinted 10 yards to the Tiger eight.Cobb Mitchell then faded backs and rifled the ball into the waiting arms of end Henry Childs for Douglass’ final touchdown. Darring missed the point and Douglass won 28-0.John Darring kicked a 34 yard field goal to a nze fans and accounted for three more points.
