2,000 Attend Com Festival At RushfordWinona Band to Play and Drill as Night Feature.Rushford, Minn.—(Special to TheRepublican-Herald) — A crowd of• •2,000 persons was attracted here at noon today for the opening events of a two-day first annual com festivaland a total of 5,000 was expected later in the day unless threatened rain falls.Prizes were presented in the doll huggy parade, In which there were about 20 entries, and in varied contests including cracker eating andhog calling which were conducted this morning in addition to the comic parade, in which there were a score of entries.This entertainment took place on the main street of the village. The exhibits of com are being shown in the Eggen garage. Prizes in the exhibits are expected to be awarded Friday.Prizes of $10, $5 and $3 are offered for the three best exhibits in the yellow varieties of com and prizes of $5 $3 and $1 are offered for the best in the white com shown. The yellow com prizes were made larger than those for ohe white com because there is a larger percentage of yellow com grown than white, according to Elvin Humble, head of the festival committee.The Winona Municipal band of about 35 pieces, under the direction of O. W. Reese, will play this evening in a stand constructed in the business section for the festival. A portion of the street is also to be reserved to permit the band spaceIn which to go through its drills and maneuvers.Sport Program,The colored Gilkerson Union Giants ball club was scheduled with a Des Moines, Iowa, colored ball team as a part of this afternoon's entertainment while Friday morning the Harmony and Rushford clubs will clash in a continuation of an old rivalry.For the afternoon, the committee has booked the Kansas City Mon-archs, fast colored ball team, and the whiskered House of David team. The olubs clashed at Winona Wednesday afternoon, the negroes winning, 4 to 1, in the 10th inning.Mumm’s band and entertainers from La Crosse will furnish the highlights of Friday evening's program. The entertainers are to be furnished by the La Crosse wholesale and retail merchants, and the Winona Municipal band is being sent by the Winona Association of Commerce.There will be a display, of fireworks tonight and Friday night and dances both evenings.
