Hess Named Valley 'Striker1 Of WeekNo less than five players were nominated for the second Valley Freedom Group’s “Defensive Player of the Week” award for the 1975 football season.Among them. Tommy Stuart of Donna, Mike ViUerreaJ of Weslaco, Brandt Cobb of Brownsville Hanna, Israel Vela of Lyford and Edwin Hess ofRaymondville.Stuart played an outstanding game from his defensive back-field position, while Villarreal made it hard to run or throw against the Panthers from his down lineman slot.Cobb had a field day recovering coughed-up footballs, Vela seemed to own the show against Edcoucb-Elsa and Hess played good, steady football against Rio Hondo.For his efforts — 12 tackles and six assists — Hess, a 6-2,185-pound senior, has been named “Defensive Player of the Week.”Hess led a swarming Bearkat defense in the shutout over Rio Hondo, helping his injury-riddled team even its record at 1-1 for the season.Stuart, who opened the game with Weslaco going both ways at defensive back and quarterback, played a major role in keeping Weslaco’s big backs contained on end runs in the 10-14 Donna win last week.. . , Bearkat LeaderVillarreal, a junior, batted down two passes and was in on at least five individual tackles along with assisting on a number of others in Weslaco's gang-tackling defense.Cobb, a 6-2, 185-pound senior tackle, had six unassisted stops, four assists and recovered two fumbles in Hanna’s whitewashing of Mercedes.Vela, a 190-pound middle linebacker, had 18 unassisted tackles and eight ass.sts for the Bulldogs in their 2*M loss to Edcouch.
