Sunday, Sept. 19,By BILL BURKE LAWRENCE — Last year the Kansas Jay-| hawks were dead last in defense among Big j 8 football teams.But 2 games into the 1971 campaign under i new head coach Don Fambrough, the “Big Blue” still is urfscored upon.Sparked by brilliant defensive play, Kansas blanked the Baylor Bears 22-0 Saturday in a non-conference clash played in a cold, slow drizzle.There were 38,000 tickets sold for the game but a crowd estimated at 32,500 wrapped in raincoats and protected by umbrellas, braved the elements.The latest shutout came on the heels of a 34-0 verdict over Washington State in the season opener here a week ago.•I'KvIvK'WWBaylorKansasFirst downs1217Rushes-yards54-9155-177Passing yardage4596Return yardage1575Passes3-17-38-15-0PuntsB-316-35Fumbles lost23Yards penalized7975It was the first time in 6 years that Kansas has blanked successive opponents.The Jayhawks stingy defensive crew set up all the Kansas scoring thrusts, 2 with intercepted passes, a recovered fumble and then a safety, which not only gave KU 2 points, but the ball following a free kick. Sophomore quarterback David Jaynes engineered that final drive.display stonewall defense sAn early testThe game was only a few minutes old when Baylor gave the Kansas defense its first stern test.The Bears took the opening kickoff at their own 26 and marched to a first and goal at the KU 3-yard line. But Kansas gave up only one yard and took over on the 2-yard line.Quarterback Dan Heck’s 9-yard pass to Mike Cerne early in the 2nd period produced the Jayhawks’ first touchdown.The 27-yard drive started after Lee Hawkins intercepted a Baylor pass on the Kansas 43 and returned it 30 yards to the Baylor 27.From there it took Heck only 6 plays to reach paydirt. After Jaynes lost 2 yards on a fumble, Nelloms went in to score.Two field goalsBetween those 2 touchdowns and safety, Bob Helmbacher, who toed both extra point conversions, booted field goals of 23 and 35 yards in the 3rd quarter.Gary Adams, a junior safety, speared anerrant Baylor pass and returned it 3 yards to the Kansas 42 to set the first field goal drive in motion.Kansas had reached the Baylor 5 in 12 plays where the momentum stopped. On 4th down Helmbacher booted his 23 yard fielder with 6:45 remaining.Five plays later a Baylor fumble was recovered by Mark Geraghty, a defensive halfback. (AP) — Kansas' apening goal-line stand was a thing of beauty in the eyes of Jayhawk Coach Don Fambrough, and the key to a 22-0 victory over Baylor Saturday.“I was just as proud of the goal-line stand today as I was of our opening touchdown march against Washington State last week,” said the Kansas Coach.Baylor took the opening kickoff and in seven plays had a first and goal situation on the Kansas three.After four plays the Bears from Baylor had advanced only to the two.The win gave Fambrough a 2-0 record as a head coach and it gave Kansas two shutouts in a row, the first time the Jayhawks have opened a season that way since Fambrough was co-captain of the 1947 Jayhawks.Last year in its first two games, Kansas gave up a total of 54 points.“Is the change from a four-man to a five-man front on defense the reason for the improvement?” Fambough was asked.“I think that made very little difference,” said the KU coach. “The big thing is they believe in themselves and in each other. They have confidence. They’re playing with tremendous enthusiasm. They’re playing really well as a team; they’re talking to each other all the time.”Fambrough thought the Kansas pass defense was particularly improved over the opening game with Washington State and gave a large measure of credit to defensive end Eddie Sheats.“He had a lot to do with an improved pass rush and the rush goes together with pass defense,” the coach said.Fambrough also had praise for quarterback Dan Heck for the second week in a row.“His experience is paying off — and that was particularly true on a day when weather conditions were like those today.” Overnight rain and a frequent drizzle kept the field slick and the ball wet.Baylor Coach Bill Beall said the game was a simple case of Kansas capitalizing on its opportunities and Baylor failing to do the same.
