PRELIM BATTLERS GIVE' BEST VALUE(By FRANK U. MKNKE)NEW YORK,. Sept. 18.—-The prelim battlers give the fight fans the best run for their money. Star bouts nine times out of ten are disappointments. The “Pork-amBean-er” boys know nothing about the science of the's game. All' they know is that .they are in the ring for the purpose of slamming each other and they surely . do slam. .There’s action every -minute. They stand toe to toe and slug—and do nothing else but slug. V| The prelim boys know .little or •nothing about the art of defense, j They know only a slight bit of the science of the game. And because | Of this ignorance,- they really do (what the fans want them to do— FIGHT. The Packey McFarland-Mike Gibbons bout was a big disappointment simply because both boys knew too much about the 'scientific end lt;j* the game. Both' wero clever in ducking—-too clever,in fact. Many blows missed the target simply because the target had moved out of the way.. The fighters clinched so frequently that they were booed and hissed by some of the crowd. Yet that’s what is to be expected when two ring generals get together. They don't stand toe-to-toe and exchange wallops. They jump in and out.again—If they can. if they can't jump out they clinch, so as to bar the other fellow from swinging. The beauer boys for ours in the future.
