PUBLIC OFFICE, BQW-STAeET. lt;Pt'GitJSM-*—In consequence of an information on oath having beet*' laid before Mr. Ford, that a pitched battle was shortly to be fought between Mcndo%a the Jew, and another famous- pugilist of the name o{ Belcher, a warrant was issued by that Magistrate against both parties, to oblige 'them to keep the peace wjthinhit jurisdiction. Yesterday Mendoza was apprehended,! and brought to this office, when Mr. Ford ex-j plained to him the nature of the charge, and the J dangerous consequences likely to result from fidch’! proceedings; and that as he, Mendoza, was a i person-described as going about for the express i purpose of fighting, it was his duty to oblige him to find sufficient security for preserving the peace.Mendoza in his defence, said, he did not give the challenge ; but that Belcher had been follow- J ing him about to provoke him to fight; and that j as it was to take place in Scotland, he did not think he was trespassing upon the laws of this kingdom.-Mi*. Ford replied, that in case they were determined to proceed, he should write to the Magistrates in' Scotland,- and use every endeavour, pot only to prevent, but to have them punished, ip case it took place. jTwo respeftablc persons coming forward on the part of Mendoza, and, as-well as himself, promising that he would not fight a pitched .battle with Belcher, or any other person, either in Eng-: laiuj o^ Scotland, he was discharged.
