Falcons opt for collarsABBOTSFORD, B.C. (CP) — Neckprotectors will be mandatory for allmembers of Abbotsford Falcons following the death of a British Columbia Junior Hockey League teammate last weekend.Jeff Butler, 18. of White Rock, B.C., died late Saturday after he was slashed in the neck by a skate blade during an exhibition game against Sidney Capitals at MSA Arena.It won t be difficult to sell the players on wearing some sort of neckprotection, Murray Lawrence, owner-general manager of the Falcons, said Monday.Butler, a promising forward, suffered the fatal injury after colliding with teammate and friend Darren Naylor, 16, in the second period. Twodoctors and two nurses attending the game were unable to stop the bleedButler w as taken to hospital wherehe died during surgery.BCJHL chairman Fred Page, former president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, said protective equipment in the throat area should be introduced at the national junior level.Most neck protectors are designed mainly for goaltenders.There are two types on the market: one attaches to the shoulder pads; the other is worn like a collar.The B.C. Amateur Hockey Association will conduct an investigation ot the incident.
