PITTSBURGH CRAWFORDS OFF TO EARLY LEAD OVERPITTSBURGH, Pa., Sept. 10 — (WPS)—A record breaking crowd ■of mixed races turned out Labor Day to see the Pittsburgh Craw-i fords win both the morning and afternoon game with the Monroe Monarchs a t Greenlee Field. They also saw the “Big Five bunch their hits and score five runs in the eighth inning of the “twilight game”. But it is not the “Rig Five’’ which we will discuss now, but the championship Tournament among Negro baseball clubs. We are reminded that on May first half which ended July 5th. 'Hie Southern League composed of Atlanta, Birmingham, Chicago, Indianapolis, Little Rock. Ixwisville. Memphis, Monroe, La., Montgomery, and Nashville—with Pittsburgh Crawfords and Cleveland as associate members. The second organization was und was made up of the following and was made upo of the following teams : Detroit, Cleveland, Homestead Grays, Hilldale, Newark Baltimore, Washington, and the Cuban Stars. In the latter part of May the Crawfords also became ass'.ciat-ed with the East-West League.Tho Southern League finished the first half and announced the schedule for the second, hut this Was not completed. Monroe Monarchs won first position in the completed half and was leading the race when the Southern League disbanded. In the East-West hookup, no schedule was annuonced for the second half. But Detroit • Wolves (whicn was later merged with Homestead Grays) led the pack in the first. This gives an idea of why more than two’ teams are contending for championship honors. Monroe,, having made a clean sweep of the South, arranged a series with the Crawfords, which was, and s, the unanimous choice of Eastern scrobes, and also has the most impressive record. Four games were played in Pittsburgh over a period of three days: On Tuesday, Sept.6 at 10 P. M. the Crawfords departed from Greenlee Field enrouts to Monroes in their own Twrentv-one passenger bus. They completed the twelve-hundred mile jump in exactly forty-one hours—arriving in Monroe Thursday at three o’colc!: In afternoon.Batting favors Crawfords to win the Southern title from Monroe. But winning this title will not settle the question of the championship team. The disorganized state of affairs among Negro baseball clubs prevents such a settlement with only one series.Cole’s American Giants have challenged the Crawfords for Western honors by reason of a one-game edge which the “Windy City” ho!ds. This play-off is scheduled to take place on September 23rd, 24th. and 25th in Pittsburgh at Greenlee Field. The most interesting defi, however, comes from the Homestead Grays for local honors. Two series have been played beLween Crawfords and Homestead Grays this year. Each club has won a series, but the Grays hold a one game edge on the Crawfords for the season.Cuban Stars have recently been declared winners of the South-Western Conference, and they are also after championship honors of National proportion. It is the [aim of the Pittsburgh\Crawfords to garner all these titles sc that no doubt or dispute will arise as to which is the best 1932 Colored Team. Should the Crawfords defeat the Grays, Chicago and the Cubans, there is a susp'cion that New York Black Yankees will be heard from. This challenge is a most worthy one. Yankees and Crawfords have engaged in twenty contests. Each team has won nine, while two ended in tie scores.GRAYS TRAILING GIANTSFT. WAYNE, Ind., Sept. 12 — (Special)—The Chicago Giants and the Homestead Grays hooked up in the fourth game of their series for the world’s colored baseball championship last Thursday night, at League park before a large crowd with the Grays, scoring a 9-G victory.
