highlight 1890’s WeekendIt will be a day of traditional football rivalries and fireworks Saturday, Sept 26 at Mansfieldduring the high point of the Fabu* lous 1890s Weekend.Football will be king that Sat* urday as two live games Will be played in Mansfield and a reenactment of a famous third one is also on the slate of activities.The Mansfield University Mountaineers will host traditional rival Lock Haven University at 1 p.m. at Karl Van NormanField, following downtown Mans field's 11 a.m. Motorlesa Parade.1The kickofis keep coming at 7 p.m. as the North Penn High School Panthers from Blossburg will host Weltsboro High School in the first annual GE Night Bowl at Smythe Park which is played for supremacy of Tioga County.At halftime of the North Penn-Wellaboro game, Mansfield University fraternity Alpha Chi Rho will play the re-creation of the World’s First Night Football game, which was originally held Sept. 2, 1892 between the university, then known as Mansfield State Normal School, and Wyoming Seminary from Kingston, Pa.Both Wellsboro head coach Russ Manney and new North Penn coach Mark Casson are excited about their game being showcased during the 1890s Weekend.•It’s a nice opportunity for the kids to play in front of a good crowd, probably bigger than someof our biggest games, Manneysaid. It’s also a good opportunity for the high schools and the college to get together and help benefit each other. We jumped at the chance to play in the game.Casson, in his first year at the Panthers’ helm, was not eyen quite sure of everything involved in the weekend when he agreed to be part of the first high school game in Mansfield history to be played at night.I wasn’t sure of everything involved but 1 knew this would be a good opportunity for the kids Casson said. And the kids are very excited about it because it’sthe biggest rivalry for the team and kids will get some great exposure. The reenactment is historically accurate including plays, rules and uniforms used in the world’s first night football game.At the conclusion of the reenactment, one^6f the most spectacular fireworks shows ever to be seen in Tioga County, will come to life over Smythe Park, condensing an hour-long fireworks display into an intense eight minutes.“If you were one of the 10,000 people to attend last year’s reenactment you’ll be even more impressed with this year's fireworks, said Dennis Miller, Fabulous 18908 Co-chairman.
