ruesday, September 13, 1979 WE REPUBLICAN-COURIEft,' Rndlay, OhioHope To Continue Teanfs Winning Ways%By MIKE ZEIGLER Staff Sports WriterWinning is the name of any game, and winning is exactly what the Findlay High cross-country team has been doing | in the two years of hi existence! ILast year the Trojans, under coach John Didich, ran up a 7-0 record after finishing its premiere season in 1968 at 11-1. That's an aggregate of 18-1.Findlay opens its 1970 season at 4 p.m. today at the Hillcrest Golf Course, hosting Napoleon. In the two team’s first meeting in 1969, Findlay barely missed a “shutout” to beat Napoleon 16-58.Cross-country is one of the few sports that is won by the team scoring the fewest points. Seven men from each team compete, but only the first five of each squad to cross the finish line are given points.Points are awarded in the order of finish. The first man finishing the two-mile race is given one point, the second man two, and so forth. The fewest points a team can score is 15, signifying runners finishing first through fifth. Therefore, a score of 15 is equal to a shutout in other sports,Didich has six of his geven top runners returning from last year’s team, which finished fifth in the Buckeye Conference and first in district competition.Included in those returning are senior tricaptains Dennis Barnes, Dave Hudson and Jeff Shadle, all two-year letter winners, and junior Jeff Hochstettler, a letterman as a sophomore, ^Other returning lettermen are senior Ken Bame and junior Bob Mauer. Both are considered by Didich as being top contenders for the fifth, sixth and seventh starting posK^ tions.Barnes the defending district individual champion, also has lettered twice in track. The 5-5 senior has run the 440-yard event in 52.0, the mile in 4:29.3 and the two-mile in 10:27.Hudson, who was the number three man last year, has run the mile in 4:43 and the two-mile in 10:19. He finished fifth in the district and also has lettered twice in track.Described by Didich as “probably the most improved man on the squad,” Shadle has rim the two-mile in 10:06 and wound up 1969 in the fifth position.Hochstettler, who holds the home course record of 10:22, also has run the 440 in 53,0 and was the number ;two man last year. In addition, the junior placed high in both the district and Buckeye Conference meets.Gone from last year is Bill Lucas, the ~ number four man who was graduated in June. Although Didich said the squad would be strengthened by returning lettermen, hesaid the success of the season will be determined on how well Lucas’ absence is covered.Practice began in August, with the team running ah average 14 miles per day. Apparently practice has paid off, as three sophomores are running faster than Hochstettler did at this time last year, and Barnes is running 32 seconds ahead of his previous first-meet time.Didich wouldn’t make any predictions. But he did talk a little.“This is the first year we’ve had experience,” he said. “If we don’t have anyone get hurt. .FINDLAY TROJANS1970 Cross-Country ScheduleNapoleonSept. 13Lima ShawneeSept. 17at Bowling GreenSept, 23at Port ClintonSept: 25at FostoriaOct. 1at Ashland ClassicOct. 3at BGSU RelaysOct. 10at Lima SeniorOct, 20at sectional AAAOct. 24(x) Sandusky and Fremont RossOct. 27at district AAAOct; 31(xx) Buckeye ConferenceNov. 3at state AAANov. 7(x)‘Triangular meet•(xx) Findlay host (HillcrestGolf Course) ,
