In the former, a dextrous boy immerfing his head in the tub (For a confiderable time), forced the fruit againft the fides, then applied his teeth to it, and received half a guinea for his reward, as the fuccefsful candidate. The pig race Was conducted with a degree of folemnity fuited to the important occafion. Two Gentlemen on horfebackpreceded the cart in which the Vittim was conveyed ; while twelve youths, diftinguifhed by ribbands, anxi-nufly waited its arrivals Sufficient law (in the fport-ing phrafe) having been given, the affrighted animal ran for three or four furlongs with great rapidity,and with half the town at his heels. The lufty competitor who Ihould raifehim from the ground by the tail, and hurl him over his fhoulders, was to obtain the prize. After the firft effort, the learned quadruped finding efcape impoffible, took fulk, and made no further attempt. Previous to his departure, his body had been rubbed with faponaceous ingredients, and tfpecially the curling extremity : fo that not one of the rivals had addrefs or ftrength for the grand at-chievement j they therefore received a pecuniary emolument, and abandoned the ground.A fpecies of diverfion, vulgarly called a Smock Race was projetted ; bur, to the honour of the place, no females could be found, however indigent their fituation, to conteft the proffered reward. As a fub-ftitute, an Afs Race is pfopofed, in which that Angular favourite of the eloquent Buffon is to difplay his agility.
