Previous toour laying before our readers the account of a battle between the Turks and Russians, we have to relate a contest of-a more humble nature, but not less interesting to a large de seription of readers.Since the battle of Barnet, between Martin and Mendoza,.some jealousies have subsisted between the viftor on that occasion, and Mr. Humphries. Challenges too have past—-but without issue. The reason why the match could not be made up, has been mentioned in this paper.—Last Monday, however, these pugilists met accidentally at Epping ; when Mr. Humphries gave that kind of defiance to the Jew, which among the French, produces what they call a rencontre-en outrance.In a word, Humphries put. his fist upon the, other’s face, which so exasperated Mendoza, that although he had before declined the contest, they had an immediate set-to in the inn-yard, where they happened to meet; this continued for about three or four minutes, till the battle was put an end to by a constable.In that small space of time, Mendoza put in two blows, and .Humphries only one. The latter got a broken nose and a black eyej the blow that Mendoza received, was on the jaw-bone, and it brought him to the ground. Mendoza evinced wonderful activity in springing up, and reaching over Humphries’s guard.
