16 THE REVIEW Tuesday, September 13, 2005Moonshine Daze ClassicSmall crowd treated to ‘awesome’ demo derbyBY ED DOER1NGA small crowd turned out for the 1st annual Moonshine Daze Classic demolition derby held Sept. 3 but derby goers definitely got their money’s worth.“It was one of the most entertaining demolitions I’ve been involved in since 1 started four years ago,” said Darren Yakimishyn, driver and one of the event’s organizers.There were only five entries for the derby and with those numbers, it was decided to run a “professional feature”.That means drivers must be aggressive and complete everyattempt at a hit.They must watch out for driver’s doors -a hit on the driver’s door is cause for immediate disqualification - but no calls will be made unless the hits were intentional.Drivers were also given a shorter time to make aggressive hits and longer restart times.“And absolutely no holding back,”Yakimishyn noted.In the driver’s meeting, competitors were told “to put on one hell of a show and be extremely aggressive”, he added.“So we ran a feature to the death... which lasted close to 30 minutes with hits exceeding 50 kliks per hour. The cars looked like they had been through three derbies,” he said.Yakimishyn says local driver Kelly Marleniuk injured his leg on the dash and his arm on his steering wheel when the wheel and steering column broke on one of his“mad dog hits”.Darcy Sweeting,from Minnedosa,drove with a broken wrist suffered in a derby earlier in the year.“That did not stop his hard hits. His back and neck were stiff. And myself, I sprained my thumb trying to steer into a mad dog hit againstKelly.Kelly also gave me my firstcase ofwhiplash. He hit me so hard on his last hit I saw stars... I broke my stick instantly,” Yakimishyn noted. “The crazy thing is we loved it. And so did the crowd.”Yakiminshyn says he has no doubt the Moonshine Daze Classic turned out to be the hardest hitting derby in Manitoba byfar.“The cars looked like bananas,” he added. “ They folded inplaces I didn’t think they would fold. Imust say this is a derbywhich actually requires a neck brace and back support.” Yakimishyn says the event was demonstrated the calibre of demolition derbies organizers are trying to bring to Roblin.“ That was a taste ofnational class driving... hard, fast, punishing hits. These hits were just as hard if not harder than the hits we experienced last year at the US DENT National Championship.”Marteniuk won the feature event, with Yakimishyn in second place and Sweeting in third.Roblin’s Stephanie Yahodynski took the Powder Puff event while Yakimishyn came back to win the Mechanic’s race.“The powder puff was very entertaining as well. Apparently you only need to use the front of the car for hitting,” he noted. “The ladies only used the front of their cars and they were hitting all out. I also think the ladies don’t need brake pedals... they don’t use them anyway.”The Mechanic’s race also saw some “across the ring” head on collisions, he added.He says at the end of the day, the front ends of the cars were bent up as bad as the back ends. “When I drove my car out of the mechanic’s heat 1 couldn’t see out of the back or front of my car,” he noted. “I could only see out my doors. Totally awesome.”Yakimishyn says all the drivers said they loved the contest and want the same kind of aggression next year.“We are looking at working with some organizers fromBrandon andMinnedosa to host a bash for cash” in May some time,” he noted. “We have the best track around and some of the best officiating. Brett Ewanyshyn was second with a 94while Andrew Sorochuk finished third with 102.Britney Wilson topped the senior girls with a score of 134, with Carly Jasper in second at 151 and Holly Patenaude back in third at 184.Josh Nattrass captured the 11-13 age group with Desirae Zimmer taking the girls title.In the 10 and under class, it was Lathan McKinney and Jaylan Blad who topped the leader board at 56.AJ Zachedniak also captured the skills competition in the senior division, which featured chipping; putting and driving, while Holly Patenaude won for thegirls.Jaden Hawryluk the 11-13 skills comj tion with LaJ McKinney winning ’skills competition in and under.Logan Hawryluk the closest to the I competition on #8 i his tee shot that finis 49 feet from the hole.
