Delaware CountySection 2SPORTSSATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13,1975‘A Tale of Two Conversions'Sun Valley borrows play from Jims for 8-6 winBy BOB TENNANT Daily Times Sports WriterASTON - A Tale of Two Conversions would make a good headline for this piece, with all due apologies to Charles Dickens Here’s the plot:Sun Valley, using an extra point alignment which it had borrowed a couple years before out of the St. James plavbook. stops the Jims. 8-6, because a St. James points-after attempt is diagnosed in advance by the Vanguard defense Now the scene It’s chilly and threatening, but an overflow crowd shows up Friday night in Aston to see both teams miss several opportunities to score in the first half Then, in the fourth quarter, A Tale of Two Conversions reaches its climax. Dana Boord, Sun Valley’s running back crashes over from the twoon fourth down behind a block by guard Tom Mills. Boord had carried six times on the eight-play drive after Dave Nuyannes returned an interception to the St James’ 30.The Vanguards line up for the extra point in a formathat looks all too familiar to St. James coach Joe Logue The plot, the scene, now on to the body of the tory “It’s the same play we've been using for a couple of years,” Logue said after the game. “They’ve added a couple of wrinkles, but we knew they ’d use it. We should have been prepared ”Sun Valley had its center, Scott Webber, holder Gary Nuyannes and kicker Rich Connelly in the center of the field, infront of the goal post To the left lined up the rest of the Vanguard team. sophomore receiver Rick Taylor, who spread wide to theright.St. James countered with a couple of players on Webber’s head, but only defensive end Mike Macknis covering Taylor.Nuyannes took the snap, rolled right and drew Macknis up on him When Macknis made his move. Nuyannes dumped the two-point pass off to Taylor“We picked up that play two years ago from St. James, “ Fithian agreed “It was the year we beat them They scored first and pull. d that on us for the two points We’ve added a couple things and used it ever since.“Gary actually has five reads to make on that play The first one is while he’s still on his knee And, the way they defensed it tonight, he has to read what the defensive end is going to do I couldn’t have read it any better than he did tonight St. James, which had stoppeditself the entire game before the Sun Valley touchdown, went to work with the score 8-0 the other way.The Jims, which were to outgain the Vanguards, 214-151 on offense, recovered a squib kick at their 44 and went right to work, moving on 10 plays to the SV 13 following a well-executed screen from^Dave Christy to John Ebling The next play, however, saw Ebling mishandle Christy's pitchout attempt Tony Manerchia fell on the loose bail at the 17 and the threat was endedA couple of traded punts later, St. James was ready to roll again This time, the Bulldogs were out of timeouts and took over on their own 33 with 1:48 remaining Christy, a junior in his first varsity start, earned his spurs on this drive alone. He nailed wide receiversJohn Kogut and Pat Zarro on out patterns for a couple of first downs which stopped the clock with 42 seconds left at the SV 34 His next attempt, to tight end Jim Pierce over the middle, was incomplete and on second down Christy scrambled for a seven-yard gain. On 3rd-and-3, Sun Valley’s Chuck Colberg was caught holding Kogut and the ball moved to the Vanguard 11 with 24 seconds left.On the next play, Christy rolled right under pressure and lofted one to Pierce, who had found his way behind the SV secondary. Pierce pulled it in and it remained for Colberg. whose holding penalty had helped set up the TD, to make retributions “The coaches had told us that the quick out was their favorite play,” Colberg said “Ken Moccia. the deep back, told me that I had the outside coverage and he’d take the inside Theywere beating me a lot on that play tonight.“But Ken gave me a lot of help. We had it covered all theway.”Sure enough. Christy dropped straight back and Kogut cut for the left sideline. Colberg stepped in front of Christy's pass, caught it, and slammed it emphatically to the ground Thus ended a honey of an opener for both teams, and some outstanding individual efforts on both sides. For Sun Valley. Boord gained 49 yards in 12 second half carries and gained 68 yards on the night. For St. James. Christy threw 26 times, completing 12 for 155 yards. Pierce caught six of Christy’s completions for 95 yards Ebling had 58 of St. James’ 59 rushing yards With the above statistical appendeces. Maybe Chuck Colberg, the Vanguards' defensive back who ended St. James’ hopes for a tie by breaking up a con version attempt, explained it best“This is a real rah-rah game.” he said “It means a lot to us It sets our season ”Nuff said
