Bulldogs plagued by injuries, illness for Thursday gameBy BILL KITCHEN Courier Sports EditorIs it always darkest beforethe dawn? That just may be confronting the Ottumwa football coach staff as they hastily prepare for Thursday’s grid contest at Cedar RapidsIf memories of the previous 50-0 and 52-0 shutouts by the Royals isn’t enough frustration then how about the possibilityof not having four starters ready when you use 11 both wavs?sessions and head coach ChuckNoRegis.Injuries and illness have limited action for BulldogHarnisch admits, “I can’t give out a starting lineup until I know who will be able to play.”Injury-UlnessQuarterback Kirk Engelbart returned to school only Tuesday after being out withthe flu. Regis lost its entire offense that finished No.5 in the state and currently holds a No. 9 ranking in the state AP poll and No. 2 in the AAA division.Ten lettermenThe Royals have 10 lettermen returning — all from the defensive unit that Good has now made into the offense. The offense is an entire senior lineup except for a junior guard.“Chuck Harnisch is a good -ouch and we know OttumwarNurias many big people,” added ood. “We aren’t playing last year’s game. It’s forgotten. What counts is this year. We are concerned about thefullback and the optional offense of Ottumwa. It’s verytough to defense.Under a new grid point system, senior Rick Brown, who came off the bench andturned in a sparkling performance against Iowa City, was tops on the list posted at Schaefer. Brown, who played alittle over two quarters, was tied with Mark Magrane formost tarkles with nine. Theplayers are awarded a point for a tackle and a half-point for assists. Magrane leads with 11V2 followed by Brown IOV2 and Reber 9. Reber had seventackles, Jim Emanuel six and Mike Jameson and LarryChmelar five each.Special merit stars went toJameson for an interception, Tim Fitsimones and Engelbart for fumble-causing tackles and Magrane and Steve Ellis for fumble recoveries.Harnisch knows that Regis is a good team. “They are traditionally good and we’ll have to do our best by filling in the gaps when we know who will be able to go and who won’t. Rick Brown, from hisperformance last week, will be a starting linebacker.Good performancessome fine blocking on offense. Both ends, Ken Reber and Jim Emanuel, also played well.” The 7:45 p.m. game at Kingston Stadium is a big challenge to Good, who now owns a 101-46-5 record. “Wehave a rough schedule and seven of our nine opponents are 4A schools.” After playing Ottumwa, the Royals will travel to Hammond, Ind., to face DeSales St. Francis ofE—T—G-C-G-T—E—QBHBHBFBChicago.Halfback Bob Beals (163) scored on runs of 72 and 10yards and Bill Corrigan scored on a pair of one-yard plunges against Regina. Regis has only 32 out for football due to asmall crop of juniors. “We may not have the over-all speed of a year ago, but our backfield is faster and our line is bigger,” notes Good.Quarterback Jeff Purdy has a good rating and took charge in the opening victory and made some fine passes. Beals, one of the state’s fastestrunners, is another big factor. His breakaway ability enabled Regis to upset Cedar Rapids Washington last fall. The Bulldogs will pursue the wishbone offense this week andCEDAR RAPIDS REGISOffense-Tim Cooper (196)John Sramek (183)Don Dietrich (181)4-Jim Merfeld (182)Tom Corrigan (166)Dan Martin (183)Tim Trcka (171)-Jeff Purdy (158)-Bob Beals (163)— Bill Corrigan (162)— Pat Shimon (185)DefenseWill include players from offense and Hank Strathman (176 T), Barry Todd (158 HB), Bob Bader (170 E), Jim Vanous (185 T), John Zobl (185 LB) and Steve Griffin (170 HB).OTTUMWA Possible startersSENIORS.
