PITTSBURGH (AP) - The big joke around the Pirate clubhouse is that Dick Stuart is playing first base because Rocky Nelson is hurt and player-coach Mickey Vernon is too old to play.“But I don’t care,” says Stuart. “Just so I’m playing.”Stuart piayed Monday night. He belted a homer, a triple and a single as the National League-leading Pirates whipped San Francisco ft-1.#“I think the reason I've been hitting better lately,” Stuart said, “is that I have been playing regularly. Before; I just wasn’t getting that chance. Playing regularly makes a difference. It gives you a chance to do something.”Stuart says he gets all upset when he doesn’t play.“I go crazy sitting on the bench. I get up and stand in the corner of the dugout. I go to the bullpen. I go into the clubhouse. I even throw towels. Not too long ago, I’d go five and six days without playing. That was really bad.For the most part. Manager Danny Murtaugh has been using Stuart against left-handed pitchers and Nelson against righthanders. Nelson is benched now with an injured foot.“Actually,” says Stuart, “I hit right-handers better than lefthanders. I see righties more often.”Stuart’s last three home runs, coming in the last seven games, all have been against right-handers.Talking about his performance in Pittsburgh's victory Monday night, Stuart said:That home run felt pretty good. I was just trying to meet the ball. I hit a fast ball and it was one of the best shots I’ve hit all year.” Then, he added jokingly:“That’s the way I used to hit them.Stuart’s 20 home runs are highfor the Pirates.
