Cardinalettes Face Canadian Foe*National Tourney Tomorrow• ^The Pottstown Cardinalettes,1948 Central Atlantic regiontitlists, will open their bid forthe world’s softball championship tomorrow night when theyface the West Canadian region champs in the first round of the National Softball tournament at Portland, Ore.The Cardinalettes will res* today after an 18-hour plane ride across the continent and will also take in tonight’s games opening the tournament.Manager Earl Potteiger will probably send his ace pitcher, Tena Stewart, against the Canadians in the first game tomorrow. Tena,. who pitched a no-hit, no-run game against Washington, D. C., in theregional finals, has a record of 19 wins and'one lossTHE CARDINALETTES left Pottstown * Saturday afternoon in a motor caravan after receiving best wishes and luck from Burgess William A. Griffith, who spoke in behalf of the borough at ceremoniesin front of Borough Hall.#A police escort accompanied the girls to the borough limits.The 1947-48 Pennsylvania champions were greeted by * another police escort on the outskirts of - Reading and were rushed to the Reading airport. Battery trouble caused the plane to be three hours late, but finally at 8:10 o’clock Saturday night, the Cardinalettes started their long journey.D.'R. Perkins, representing the. Optimist club of Pottstown,.. was at 'the airport to wish the team luck and announced thaj^the local clubwill honor the team’ at a dinner-dance on their return ,from Oregon.PERKINS SAID the 'Optimist club will hold a celebration whether the team wins or loses.Approximately 100 persons from Pottstown and Reading gathered at the airport to wish the players lots of luck. . i? Cardinalettes officials said theyexpected to arrive in—Portland around 2 o’clock (Pottstown time) yesterday afternoon. They said the trip would probably take about 18 hours. A group -of 18 players, two coaches, scorekeeper and six loyal rooters made the trip.Team officials announced before leaving that $600 is still needed to pay for the trip.Officials win continue to collect -contributions’ this - week**' so ~ final payment of thejarip could be made when the team arrives home next Monday.
