Pugilists Sized Up.The beat drawing card on the pugilistic map to-day would bo a meeting Between those two old rivals—.Itm I Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons. Jeff- ! fies is in a class by himself and there Is no one whom he could meet now ‘.hat would be able to w'het the public tppetite to any great extent, with the possible exception of Corbett. But,Ihen, the clever James could only hope lo win out by keeping away from Jeffries’ fists, and it is doubtful if he rould do this for 25 rounds. The rhampton needs to land but a veryfew of his terrible blows to pm away any antagonist. Again sport lovers tlo not care particularly for run away fighters. The battle between Corbett and Fitz at Carson City was one of the best ever fought. The latter. In spite of his age, appears to be Justas good now as he was then, while Corbett, although he has not taken the best care of himself, with a faithful tourse of training, the same as he look when he put himself in such superb shape to meet Jeffries, could undoubtedly get into first-class condition again. Fitzsimmons is the Ideal fighter. He combines the two qualities essential .n a fighter of championship calibre—science and hard hitting. Jeffries' battles are won through bis great hitting power and bis ability to take all kinds of punishment without it weakening him. He has 110 science worth speaking of. for Corbett. Huh-lin and Fitzsimmons were all able to hit him easily, but to no purpose. Corbett has a superabundance of science. He is justly acknowledged to be the cleverest boxer who ever drew on a glove. If he possessed the punching power of Fitzsimmons he would stand head and shoulders over all other ring artists, for, in that event, he would be more than a match for Jeffries. The champion, totigh as he is. could not stand such Jabbing as Corbett gave him in their meeting j wore the latter fortified with tin* Fitz punch. Fitzsimmons and Corbett are well matched, with the odds slightly in favor of the former. But it is extremely doubtful if these two great exponents of the fistic art can be brought together again.
