Eagles beat Miners»Y STEVE FIELDS Citizen Sports Editor The Miners tried everything Saturday afternoon, passing, running and three quarterbacks, but nothing worked as the Brown County Eagles ruined the Miner homecoming27-8.At halftime of the game Kelly McBride was crowned the homecoming queen.Brown County wasted no time in getting into the Miner end zone. On the Eagles first possession they marched through the Linton defense in nine plays, covering 70 yards for a touchdown 1' The two big gains in the drive were a 25 yard run by Steve Gray and a 15 yard run also by Gray.Greg Stoll covered the final iix yards with 6:33 left in the first quarter. The extra point attempt failed and Brown County led 6-0.■ Brown County went on another march after Linton could not move the ball but a much improved Linton secondary stopped the drive as freshman Brian Mifflin picked off the Eagle pass.With only 3:16 gone in the second quarter Brown County scored again. It was again Stoll covering the final four yards for the touchdown.The big play of the drive was a 37 yard pass play from quarterback Bruce Lawlin toAlan BlanchetteThe Eagles used a little razzle-dazzle on the extra point, lining up off the ball, confusing the Linton defense and scoring two points for a 14-0 Eagle lead.Exactly four minutes later Brown County was back in the Miner end zone.Taking the ball on their own 10 yard line, Brown County covered 90 yards in five plays.First down was a Gray 15 yard run second down a half back pass from Gray to Doug Ruse covered another 30 and after a time out Gray rambled for another six. The touchdown pass came from the Linton 24, as Lawlin threw a quick short pass over the middle to Ruse, who ran the remaining 20 yards for the score.Aaron White kicked the extra point making the Brown County lead 21-0.Linton held Brown County on the opening drive of the second half and recovered and Eagle fumble to gain possession. Miner linebacker Brad Wagner scrambled to the bottom of the pile for the ball.But on Linton's first play from scrimmage the Miners fumbled and Brown County got the ball back on the Linton 35 yard line.Brown County marched the 35 yards in three plays, two by air, for the touchdown. Lawlin found end Mark Kirts open for a 21 yard pick up and end Ken Seitz for another 11 yard gain. Bob Arnold covered the last twoyai ds for the score.The Miners started a march on their next possession and with the running for fullback Tony Ledbetter covered 32 yards on the ground. The Miners moved the ball as far as the Eagle 22 but got no further.But Linton offense had found a way to move and on the Miners’ next possession scored.The Miners benefited from a pass interference call which moved the ball to the Eagles’ 30 yard line. Then Linton picked up another five on a Brown County penalty before Ledbetter and Robertson took command of moving the ball.Linton picked up a first down with two four yard runs by Ledbetter and a three yard dive by quarterback Rodney Robertson.Robertson kept the ball for another 10 yard gain, then Jim Newton added another three. Robertson suffered two set backs before running seven yards for the Linton touchdown with 6:06 left in the game.Linton faked a kick on the extra point was freshman quarterback Brian Mifflin tossed a pass to end Ken Gabbard.Linton totaled 55 yards of total offense in the game, 19 passing and 36 rushing while Brown County had 385 yards of total offense.Linton will host North Daviess Friday night.DAVID YOUNT (20) battles the Brown County pass defense for a Dean Leroux pass but the Eagles' pass defense prevailed as didBrown County in the Miners' homecominggame Saturday afternoon.
