Miners to celebrate homecoming;Union travels; Warriors at homeBY STEVE FIELDS Citizen Sports EditorBrown County will bring more than a hapless football team to Linton Saturday afternoon, the Eagles are 1-1 and are looking to upset the Miner’s homecoming plans.Dugger-Union and North Knox will both be playing tonight with Union traveling to Cloverdale for a 7:30 p.m. game and North Knox hosting West Washington, also at 7:30 p.m.The Miners have a two game winning streak over the Eagles and Brown County has never come close to Linton. But this is one year where the two teams go in about evenBrown County won its first game this season, defeating Mitchell 20-18 then losing last week to host Mooresville 15-6.Bruce Lawlin is the biggest Eagle scoring threat. Lawlin, at 6-2, 175 pounds, is the Brown County quarterback and leading ground gainer with 75 yards in two games.Lawlin can also pass and Doug Ruse is his favorite receiver. Ruse had caught the ball four times for 44 yards so far this year.Miner coach Dan Galbraith has been preparing his defensive unit for the potent Brown County attack this week. Scouts indicate the Eagles have a size advantage, but the Miners are much faster and quicker. On defense this is a definite plus for Miner linebackers Brad Wagner and David Yount and monster man Herb Abbott.Linton defensive backs proved they can stop the aerial attack last week intercepting three passes against North Knox. But Brown County is primarily a running team from the wing T offensive.Galbraith has not named his starting quarterback yet. Both Dean I^eroux and Brian Mifflin are in the running with Rodney Robertson still on the sidelines injuredThis could be one of the roughest games Dugger-Union will have this year as they meet Cloverdale tonight.The 0-1 Bulldogs are facing an undefeated, veteran squad at Cloverdale and coach Paul Steele admitted prior to the opening game Union was short on experience.The Bulldogs came out of theopener at Sullivan with a healthy squad. David Jobe will likely be the target of the Clovers’ defense after scoring two touchdowns at Sullivan. But Steve Graves and Jeff Sec rest both have good speed and are hardAt the same time Union is still trying to pass the ball more making Lonnie Boyd, Terry Sluder and Bill Thompson scoring threats.North Knox will be after a little revenge when West Washington come into the Warrior’s stadium tonight.North Knox was defeated last year by a veteran Senator team.But this year the Warriors are the veteran squad.The Senators are currently 0-2, losing to Salem 8-0 and Brownstown 40-8 Tim Jackey and Joe Zinc return from a strong offensive team in 1976 both 5-11 halfbacks But Brent Rosembalm is a new quarterback. Rosembalm played flanker last year and was moved into the signal calling position this season.“Last year our line had trouble with their linebackers,”said Warrior coach Jim Beery “because we were mainly a running team but this year we are more versatile.”More versatile is right, for Linton had prepared for a running North Knox team, then the Warriors went to the air lastFriday.“They operate out of a veer offense, primarily a passing offense but run well out of it also, Beery said David Engleking at 6-0 and Jeff Webb at 5-8 are Rosembalm s favorite receivers.Evert winning with easeFOREST HILLS, N Y (UPI) — It will be more of the same today — Chris Evert will step onto clay and her opponent will turn to putty.The top-seeded woman kicks off the Ladies’ Day card at theU.S. Open Tennis Championships in a semifinal match against fifth-seeded Betty Stove.Evert has won 111 straight matches on clay, her last loss coming on Aug *2. 1973, toEvonne Goolagong in Cincinnati — four long years ago.^nd Stove should pose no serious threat to her incumbency.Miners, T-Birds winLinton evened its record at 2-2 while Eastern won its first meet of the season at L and M in county cross country competition Thursday.The Miners defeated visiting Shakamak 23-34 with Bob Bradford finishing only six seconds behind the course record he set Wednesday against Brazil. The Linton junior ran the course in 13:19 and finished almost a full minute ahead of his nearest competition.Brett Kramer was second in the meet for the Lakers, run ning a 14:04 while Linton took third and fourth places. John Stefancik won third place forthe Miners in 14:05 as Kramer edged him at the finish line. Tom Collins, former Linton course record holder, was fourth with a 14:22.Kevin Felkertook fifth place for the visitors with a 14:26 to round out the top bracket.Steve Parola finished sixth for the Miners witha 14:41 and three seconds behind came Shakamak’s Samm in 14:44.Melvin Kendall and Blaine Lannan took eighth and ninth for the home team Kendall ran a 15:04 for eighth and Lannan a 15:14 for nine. Mondary finished 10th for the Lakers.Linton and Shakamak willBut Evert says, “Believe it or not, Betty’s gonna give me the most problems on clay.”For Evert to capture her third consecutive Open title she must first get by Stove and then take the winner of today s other semifinal match between second-seeded Martina Navratilova and 12th-seeded WendyTurnbull.Navratilova, coming off a 6-4,6-1 victory over longtime girlhood friend and lOth-seed Mima Jausovec of Yugosavia, is at the top of her game.The 24-year-old Turnbull, who Thursday dumped Wimbledon queen Virginia Wade, 6-2, 6-1, has shown great improvement in the past year.
