Nephi Brings PowerfulTeam to State TourneytintlnSouthern Utah Champs Have Well Balanced Club to Seek TitleRICHFIELD — Nephi, representing the Southern Utah league m the state amateur baseball tournament, will present probably the strongest aggregation ever droduced in the southerntlpart of the state. The team, as it played throughoutthe season, will be augmented by some of the outstanding, players of the Sa-lina and Richfield teams. Dally Birl and Bill Gates of Satina, and Whity Twlgfe and Erwin Staples of Richfield are being considered. Bird, while he has done considerable mound duty for the Salts, is valuable at shortstop and for his hitting. During the league season his average was close to .425.Gates is an exceptionally heady catcher. His work with the stick has not been sensational, but it is “average,” and many of his hits have come when runs were needed. Staples of Richfield has been to state tournaments before, and his reputation as a pitcher is well known. Twigg, a newcomer to the league, won the praise of the major league veteran, Grover Cleveland Alexander, when he pitched against the House of David team at Salina. Alexander remarked that “he has speed, control and a beautiful curve.”Gien Worthington will be on first base unless his school duties keep him from the tournament, in which case Staples will take over that position. Glen is a long-distance hitter and his capable covering of the initial sack makes him a good field captain. Cliff Reese.at second base is steady, consistent, and apt to break up any game with a solid hit.The short field assignment has been handled by Bailey, but because of his light hitting and occasional wild speels Dally Bird expects to get the call. Grant Sperry wilt be at third. The outfield will be made up of Arvil Sperry, Leland (Bish) Bellis-!lon and Doc Jones. v The latter, though not fast in covering the territory, judges balls instantaneously and hits hard. Bclliston is a pitcher, but his hitting has caused his shift to the outfield. ‘Both he and Sperry are fast and sure on fly balls. With Mont Sperry and BIU Gates, the catching department will be equal to any in the state, local fans believe. Both are good receiver and Gates, in particular, knpws how to get the most out of a twirler. The club will have an abundance of chuckers in Paul tLefty) Christi-son, Dell Steele, Ray Painter, Twigg and Staples. Should they fail, Bellis-ton and Bird can be called upon. The batting order which this lineup will offer will be sufficient to cause any opposing moundsman plenty of worry. There are no weak hitters to allow easing up. Defensively, it will be hard to get on base against them with anything but clean hits, as they are fast and sure and play well together.Twigg probably will draw the opening assignment. Being of such a disposition that neither hits, errors nor men on bases worry him, he seldom needs relief. LeCty Christison has been coming forward at a fast clip in the last few weeks and is now most effective. U the necessity'arises, Dell Steele can throw a most effective drop with control for four or five innings and be sure of shutting out almost any opposition in this section. Without working his curves so much he can no a full came in good stvlft*
