Schnars Makes AnotherB\ AGNES“VALBAKER■CorrespondentBUSTI—The final race of the 1977 season at Stateline Speedway Saturday evening saw Bob Schnars making the trip to the winner’s circle once again Of the 15 Late Model races run during the season, Schnars won all but four.The other winners were Dave Turner, two victories; John Hedman and Skip Furlow.Busti’s Bud Ericcson finished first in front of Dick Barton in the Sportsman main event Ron Hebner waited for the final night to pick up his first Cadet feature victory.Bill Mahan quickly moved to the front of the pack in the double-point l^ate Model Championship race He was followed by Bill Dorman, but by the second lap, Ericcson, the eighth starter in the 30-car field, moved up to second place. The race was red-flagged on lap three, when Dave Lundgren and Handy Otander smacked into the fence, while John Whitehead flew backward downthe front straight.No sooner had action resumed than the yellow flag was thrown to sort out another pile-up Under the green again, Ericcson passed Mahan to nail down the lead while Miles Stit-/inger took over the second spot It was Ericcson and Stit-zinger for four more laps, until Furlow moved into the second spot For the next 21 laps, Furlow tried every trick in the book in attempting to pass the leader, but it wasn't until lap 29, when the cars rounded turn four, that his break came. GaryHazzard, running most of the race in the sixth spot, was jammed into the front fence For two more laps, Ericcson withstood the charging Furlow until, on the 31st lap, he found the track completely blocked between turns three and four. Unable to restart his stalled car in time for the green flag, he was put to the rear of the pack, moving Furlow into the lead spot with Schnars second.By the final third of the race, the pressure exerted by Schnars on the leader began to tell on Furlow With two laps to go. the Busti pilot came down inside to pass as the leader seemed to wash out leaving the second turn.Furlow was forced to settle for second place. He was followed by Mahan, Dave Turner and Emory Mahan.Starting second off the pole, Dick Barton took the lead in the Sportsman finale as soon as the action began. Scott Gurdak followed him for two trips around the track, before yielding to Bob Harvey, who ran second for four more lapsOn the 11th lap restart, Ericcson moved up and attached himself to the leader By the 15th lap, he moved under Barton as the cars came off turn one Ericcson was followed across the Unish line by Barton, Skip Furlow, Whitehead and Ron Blackmer.Early leaders for the Cadet main event were Billy Pierce and Scott Gustafson Neither was able to hold his front-running position Eighth-place starter Ron Hebner survivedsix caution laps to move in front of Denny Maze and into the lead as the cars began their eighth trip around the oval. Hebner pulled steadily away from Maze and held a quarter-lap lead over the pack at the finish It was was Hebner’s first victory of the yearDave Taylor bested Matt Puttman in the first Spectator feature In the second race, Warren Crouch came home ahead of Bob Houghwot in the second event.Randy and Denny Stufflebeam from Kennedy, N Y., were the winners of the Great Wheelbarrow Race. They collected trophies and divided $500 for their efforts.
