It’s not where 1wanted to be,”Fike turned in a third-place finish.F reshman Erin Pichey, a Wilson Christian transfer, crossed the line in 23:02 for the Lady Golden Demons’ top time, good for seventh.Senior captain CeCe Yarbrough tried to run the race, but was unable to finish.“Today was a hard racein that I think today you saw the desire of runners,” first-year Fike coach Patrick Yarbrough said. “It was so hot and we have a hard course finishing the last half mile uphill that a lot of themstruggled.”Holding on to the pack mentality that has helped define Fike’s program over the years, senior KristinEwan (23:50) and junior Leighann Bowen (23:52) followed in ninth and tenth, respectively. The Demons also counted the finishes of sophomore Marie Page Smith (20th,25:55) and freshman Brittany Ricks (27th, 26:47)“I thought I ran good,” Pichey said. “I tried to push myself throughout the race and I was just pushing myself and helping myself keep going.”After West, the Lady Warriors saw a pair of freshmanin Mallory Sullivan (25:35) and Megan Westbrook finish 17th and 18th.Senior Emily Duncan was 25th in 26:38, while sophomore Kaitlvn Bradshaw logged a 31 st-place finish in 27:37.“This being the first official Big East meet, I just wanted to see us improve on our scrimmage times,” Hunt coach Rusty Boyette said. “Some of us did. A lot of girls didn’t run one or two of the scrimmages due to schedule conflicts, so I’ve had times for a lot of the girls. Some of the girls, this was the first race setting that I’ve had some times forthem, so it was good to see.”Amanda Johnson led a quartet of Ladybirds to the finish line from the No. 21 position.Johnson’s time of 25:58 was promptly followed by Savanna Rocco (26:07), Holly Brantley (26:28) and Jessy Lucas (26:30), Madison Bell was 28th in 27:04 for Southern Nash’s fifth runner.2013 wilsorrtimes.com 3BBIGRESULTSWednesday’s results from the first 3-A Big East Conference meet of 2013, hosted by Fike H»gh at J, Burt Gillette Athletic Complex. Fike freshman Chris Jenkins posted a personal best of 23;02, while junior Ethan Whalen was the first Demon to cross in 21:45, good for 30th and his second-best time of 2013. Singletary was joined by sophomore Marcus Medine-Artis (17th, 20:28), junior Logan Vick (25th, 21:16), junior Jimmy Johason (26th,21 ;25) and junior Teddy Blume (41st, 22:45).“Wfe lost Nathan Heath this summer because his family moved to Winston-Salem, and we lost my number two guy, Trevor Purvis, because his family moved to Atlanta,” Boyette lamented. So when you lose your toprunners — not to graduation, but to moving, it really puts a big dent into your team. So having Dominiquecome out his senior year, never having run crosscountry, and to go from eighth in one of the scrimmages to the top five today, he’s got determination and the drive. He doesn’t carewhat position he’s in, he’s going to be running as hardas he can.”Added Singletary: “We did a good run last week. Since this track is a lot flatter, we can run a lot faster times.Southern Nash was paced by Kevin Bryant’s sixth-place finish in 19:05.The next Big East meetwill take place Wednesday,Sept. 11, on the Hunt campus* !5 ijiewi^awihontJmescan 1265-7807Twitter a WT
