After forcing the Lumberjacks to punt on the opening drive after just four plays, West began to move the ball. The Cavaliers made it from theirown 35-yard line to the 50 onstrong running from senior tailback Bobby Jones. But the Richwood defense stopped them there. The next play set the tone for the rest of the game. After a high snap that the Cavalier punter had difficulty with, Lumberjack senior Charlie Alderman broke through the line to block the punt, then he picked up the ball and galloped 46 yards to give Richwood an early 7-0 lead. The Cavaliers were noticeably stunned. Their offense was unable to move the ball pasttheir own 35, and they had to punt again. Another high snap forced the punter into a quick kick, which was blocked and recovered by Alderman again, this time giving Richwood the ball at the West 32.“When you’re a young team like we are playing an experienced team like Richwood, you just can’t make those kinds of mistakes,” said Cavaliers coach Howard Hylton. “They’re too strong of a team.”Greenbrier West’s defense did manage to hold the Lum-beijacks to only 35 yards and just two first downs in Rich-wood’s next two drives. Things were beginning to look brighter for the Cavaliers. But if blocked punts won’t kill you, fumbles will.See LUMBERJACKS on Page 4B
