300 Amateur Sports Drivers I To Battle in iSational RaceBy DAVE ARNOLDMore than 300 amateur sports car racers are expected to converge on the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend for the Sports Car Club of America NeOhio Region’s annual national championship points races.The weekend’s races are not open to the public, according to the organizing region.BECAUSE of the lack of spectators, in past years drivers have been traditionally more relaxed and in last year's event, 10 of them broke course class records, the second highest record -setting output ever carded at Mid - Ohio. Eight broke records in both 1966 and 1967.Last year's event attracted 195 drivers to the starting grids and 228 the previous year Only the 243 cars at last October's regional race and 272 two months ago were bigger races as far as quantity goes.Several drivers from the Mansfield area are in contention for SCCA Central Division championships which will earn them trips to the Thanksgiving weekend American Road Race of Champions at Daytona International Speedway.Jim Killion of Ashland currently leads the Formula Veeclass points race with 27 with John Mills of Detroit, also driving a Zink, the closest contender with only 19. Points are awarded on a 9 - 6 - 4 - 3 • 2- 1 basis to the top six finishers. Mike Piper of Mansfield who set the fastest lap during July’s race in his Zink is 14th with four points.Jack Baumgardner of Mansfield, the track C Sedan record holder, is second in C Sedan, trying to defend his divisional championship. But with 21 points, it is impossible for him to overtake Dr. Jim Dunkel of the Blackhawk Valley SCCA region who has 37 points in his Mini Cooper S.Russ Sprang of Mansfield has carded seven points in his gold F Production Sprite and sits seventh in that class. In the popular Formula Ford class, John Eiielgeorge of Mansfield has one point.Most of the classes are decided by now, or at least the champions are, with eight of the nationals out of the way. There is still some in - fighting going on, like the A Production class where Owens -Corning Fiberglas Racing Team members Tony De-Lorenzo of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Jerry Thompson of Clawson, Mich., have been swapping the lead all season long in their thundering 427 Stingrays. Thompson now leads with 48 points to 45 for DeLorenzo who won the class at Mid - Ohio in July.ONLY FOUR records were broken during the July race which was still a good effort due to the downpours of rain which hampered driving abilities. In B Production, Dwight Knupp of Detroit will be trying to put his AMX back in the lead he lost to A1 Barker of Louisville, Ky. in a 327 Stingray, 36to 34 points.
