Chiefs, Indians Meet Tonight As IL Series OpensBy United Press InternationalThe Indianapolis Indians and the Syracuse Chiefs meet at Indianapolis tonight in the opener of a best-of-seven series for the International League championship.The Indians won the Southern Division pennant Tuesday night on their home field when they nipped the Atlanta Crackers, 1-0, in a “sudden death” playoff after the teams tied for first at the conclusion of the regular season Monday night.Fritz Ackley, the league’s top pitcher, blanked the Crackers on two hits in gaining his 18th victory against five defeats. The Indians scored the game's lone run off Harvey Branch in the fourth inning on a walk and singles by Jim Koranda and Charlie Smith.The Crackers and the Toronto Maple Leafs — the division runners-up — will open a best-of-seven set at Atlanta tonight for the right to meet the winner of the Indianapolis - Syracuse series for the Governor’s Cup.The standings (final):Northern BivisionVt.
