PAGE TWELVE*L\)'Before turning our attention to another football season, a bit of praise is in order for the Cox Plumbing softball team. These boys, managed by Tom Newman, have won the city softball crown for three years in a row. Two years ago, they were known as Edison Company. Last, year they were the Oxnard Merchants. But they were the same kids who camethrough again this season undefeated in league competition. How’s this for a season record? Thirty-three wins and only three defeats. That’s what the Plumbers accomplished this season. Two of the losses came in the Santa Barbara Semana Nautica tournament.Jackie Newman, the prizepitcher of the team, gave up only 10 runs in the 30 games.Isi(;SiIf these fellows stick togeth er, they’ll probably run up long string of city champion- n ships since most of them are quite young. Jackie, for example, is only 18. !BThe roster includes Harold Alstot, Norris Fletcher, Charles Jones, Larry Lacey, BufordpMartin, Barney Martinez, Ben- wny Martinez, Ted Mendoza, Gene Needham, Fred Osmond.Sparky Pebble, Marion Smithtnd Bert Stern.eahene* * * j upMost of them were on hand sti$5anpi;to receive individual champion-ihip trophies following theirtitle game with the Oxnard Elks.V* e were informed that Fletch-er’s trophy will be mailed to him as he has entered Mid-western University in Texas.Tom, w'ho is Jackie’s dad. ghowed that he still retains histhibatting ability by co m i n g through with several timely hits during the final stages of the tournament when several of his regular players were working.meFoCilNow Tom hopes to have a free lance baseball team to play during the wdnter months.](U.FComisplt;Ne
