Phila claims crown at NewcomerstowNEWCOMERSTOWN — —————————Sparked by brothers Matt and Brad Whitis, who crossed the line just five seconds apart in the top five, and Scott Horrisberger and Todd Evans, also five seconds apart in sixth and eighth place, New Philadelphia captured the boys Division II (big school) crown of the fifth annual Newcomerstown Cross Country Invitational Saturday.Matt Whitis placed third behind individual winner Steve Barker of Claymont (15:43) and second-place Pete Melchior of Perry (15:46) with a time of 15:59 overthe three-mile course.Brad was just one second behindfourth-place Bill Conti of Hudson with a fifth-place time of 16:04, while Horrisberger was next at 16:20 and Evans followed in eighth at 16:25, just two seconds off the pace set by seventh place Sean Haney of Perry.Those four runners helped give the Quakers 36 points, well ahead of runnerup Hudson in the team standings with 84.MEANWHILE, John Sponaugle of Tusky Valley captured individual honors in Division I with a time of 15:19, but the Trojans could finish no better than fourth in the team standings, won by Caldwell with 42 points. Ridgewood was second with 81.Powerful Hudson ran away with the girls team title, scoring 41 points to Zanesville Rosecrans’ “A” team with 84.
