Alma not only repeated as District 1 A champs, but they also fought their way into the semi finals of the state j playoffs where they finally fell ! to Augusta in two overtimes.Bock will have to fill the va cancies left by no less than six graduated All-District performers if he wants a repeat effort this year. Included in that sex-tet is Henry Parker, who raced for 1.440 yards last season. Parker’s latest feat was a winning 'contribution to the West victory in the Arkansas High School All-Star game last August.The other All District gradu ates include nose guard Kenneth P i c k s 1 e y. quarterback Steve Martin, halfback Gary Perry, center Gary Gray and kicking specialist Doug Hill. Tackles Tandv Bradlev and .Jim Powell and end Randy Bradley must also be replaced.This situation isn’t quite that grim for Bock, however. He still has a list of 17 lettermen return ing including five starters, and four of the returning first teamers collected All League honorslast year Heading the list of numeral winners is Marvin Daily, a bur ly 220 pound fullback who bulled wav for 990 vards last vear. Mike Woods, a 180 pound guard.also returns with tackle MarkManes. Rddie Bryant, fi I. 175-pounds. will be back at end. Nicky Oliver, the only rookie to win a starting job last year.hiwill again beef up the line with a year’s experience and his 200 pounds.Added strength in the forward wall may be coming with the addition of Pat Harrison, a 6-1, 205 pound transfer from California. Lee Pixley. injured last season. should be able to fill the assignment at noseman. Gary Dean, an All-District safety on defense last year, has switched to offense where he will assumethe responsibilities of quarterback.Bock is also counting on the potential of a promising group of sophomores. Thell Parker (Henry's brother) will get a good look at halfback. Mark Bolding is a candidate in the offensive line while Lary Greenfield will get a try at quarterback. Bryan Gregory also shows some promise for the backfield.Junior Bobby Reinschscmedt.who didn’t piav last year, will also be tested at halfback.Lack of experience, especially on offense, is apparently the Airedale's major problem at this juncture. Bock, however, hopes that his defensive unit will be able to take up the slack.With the addition of Clarksville as a conference foe. Almawill have to be in top form torepeat their championship. Out side the district, the Airedales will also face traditional powers such as Paris, St. Anne's and Sallisaw tone of the top teams in Oklahoma last year).Bock and his assistants. Francis Pitts.
