Long Tresses, Beards T angle With BaseballBouse of David, Led by ‘Old Pete’ Alexander, Meets Holsum Sunday ForenoonLong hair, short hair, curly hair and straight—heavy beards, scrubby beards, gray beards and red—all will be vogue at Community park Sunday morning at 10:30 o’clock, when the Israelite House of David baseball club clashes with the Salt Lake Holsum Bakers—rain or shine.With one exception, every member of the baseball team representing the Benton Harbor, Mich., religious cult wears long hair and long beards. In fact, Doc Tally, the Babe Ruth of the club, has hair 30 inches long and a beard practically a foot in length.The one exception to beards end long hair is Grover Cleveland Alexander, for 20 years a major league pitcher, and now manager and ace pitcher of the team. Alexander is not a member of the religious colony, but is probably the best individual attraction of the House of David club.Alexander has announced that he will start the game on the mound—• giving Salt Lake fans their first oppor-ni to sce the hcro of the 1026 world s series in local action.Opposing him will be Lee Johnson, former Pittsburgh Pirate hurier. So it 11 be battle between two former fiwgor league twlrlers.Never has the House of David failed to give Salt Lake fans a good baseball game and a show full of laughs. In four previous games here they have scored three victories, losing only in their first appearance here in 1930, when 3000 fans saw this unique club in action.In meeting the Holsum Bakers they are clashing with Salt Lake’s fastest club, first half champions of the Slate league. The Bakers are looking forward to the game with much enthusiasm, as it will be the first opportunity for some of the players to face such a baseball hero as Grover Alexander.Alexander has invited Salt Lake boys attending the game to meet him nt 10 a. m., a half hour before the contest starts, Alexander will give them a number of baseball hints, show them how he tosses curves, answer questions and autograph baseballs and scrapbooks for those who desire.
