Killifer. who was born andraised in Paw Paw and Van Burencounty, first gained fame in thenational pastime as a catcher for (Jrover Cleveland Alexander, and was one of the greatest receivers of all time.Joined Cards As CoachAfter a stay with the Philadelphia club of the National league. Killifer and Alex were traded to the Chicago Cubs. After his playing days with the Cubs, Killifer was appointed manager of the Chicago club. The Chicagoans later released Killifer as manager and hebecame a coach for the Cardinals.During the season of 1920, the Cardinals, playing under the leadership of Rogers Hornsby were battling for the first pennant in the history of St. Louis. The club needed pitching material. Alexander was in “dutch’* with the Cubs and Killifer asked the Cardinal management to buy Alex and he would promise them the hunting. Alexander wrns purchased and under Killifer's care. Alex won several games for the Cards, who won the league pennant.Goes To BrownsAfter Hornsby was sold by the Cardinals and a new system installed to run the club, Killifer stepped out and cast his lot with the Browns.This spring Dan Howley, the manager of the Browns, left the American league to pilot the Cincinnati Reds of the National loop. Phil Ball, owner of the Browns, then promoted Killifer to the position as manager.While the Browns have not burned up the world in the win column of the American league, the club has been playing a good brand of baseball and is hovering around the .500 mark, which is not so bad with teams like the Philadelphia Athletics and New York Yankees in the same circuit.Second Major InvasionThe invasion of the Browns will be the second major league to play here this season. Last week the New York Giants played at the local park before a crowd of fans that numbered close to 4,000 persons. *It is expected that Van Buren county baseball fans will take charge of the pre-game ceremonies and make the day “Bill Killifer Day” at the House of David. It has been several years since the Paw Paw lad has displayed himself in this section in a baseball uniform, although he spends part ofhis off season vacation at his former home.
