There are vigorous denials that the French Lick Springs have failed, but a special from that place to the Indianapolis News says: “The famous French Lick Springs have ceased to flow. Pluto, the most famous mineral spring in Indiana, stands stagnant, two feet below the surface, while Proserpine, famous for its cure of rheumatism, gives forth its healing (luid only at the bidding of a pump. All this has been caused by a quarrel. Dr. William Ritter, who keeps adrug store, had a difficulty with Lee Sinclair, the proprietor of West Baden Springs. The difficulty arose because of a charge made by Sinclair for water used by the boarders in Ritter’s cottage hotel. Ritter proceeded to drill a well on his land, a quarter of a mile below West Baden, and a mile and a half below French Lick. The result was ihat on Saturday last he struck a strong stream of water, impregnated with mineral, at a depth of 305 feet. Soon the water in the springs at French Lick was seen t.) be failing, and before long it ceased to flow entirely, while the How from the Ritter well increased. Consternation for a time reigned at French Lick, where nearly $l,u0u,O0O was invested in property, dependant on the springs. These springs are owned by a Louisville company. All the region round about is deeply interested iu the outcome. Dr. Ritter expresses a purpose to plug up his well if necessary, to preserve the How of the French Lick Springs. It is a serious question if this will answer. The Ritter well was closed Monday night, but only a slight increase in the water standing in the springs at French Lick so far is noticeable. The guests have nealy all left French Lick, and unless something favorable soon occurs, the hotel will close. Deep regret is felt on accouut ofthe catastrophe/’
